What Epifanes PU Clear Satin is and why choose it
Epifanes Poly‑urethane Clear Satin (PU Clear Satin) is a two-component, chemically curing acrylic polyurethane varnish with a clear satin sheen (approx. 40% gloss). It contains high-end UV filters that protect wood from discoloration and, combined with excellent water resistance and resistance to alcohol and aggressive household chemicals, offers durable protection for both interior and exterior woodwork.
Designed as the finishing layer in a full two-component varnish system on dimensionally stable wood such as marine plywood, it is particularly suitable for high-wear surfaces like cabin soles and salon tables. It can also be used for the maintenance of intact two-component interior varnish systems, regardless of brand.
Main features
- Two-component PU system: Component A (base) + Component B (cure) for a hard, scratch-resistant finish.
- Satin appearance: Approx. 40% gloss level for a warm, low-sheen, clear finish.
- High-end UV filters: Helps prevent wood discoloration in interior and exterior systems.
- Excellent chemical resistance: Superior protection against water, alcohol and aggressive household chemicals.
- For interior and exterior use: On dimensionally stable wood and as maintenance over existing 2‑component interior varnishes.
- High mechanical durability: Hard, scratch-resistant surface ideal for high-traffic areas.
- Versatile application methods: Can be applied by brush, roller or spray (with appropriate thinner and technique).

- Component B: 1 year after production date.
Mixing and thinning
- Mixing ratio (by weight): 2 parts Component A (base) : 1 part Component B (catalyst).
- Induction time at 68°F (20°C): approx. 10 minutes after mixing both components.
- Recommended wet film thickness: 2–2.5 mil (≈ 1–1.5 mil dry).
- Thinner for brushing: Epifanes Poly-urethane Brush Thinner or Epifanes PU Slow Reducer.
- Thinner for spraying: Epifanes Poly-urethane Spray Thinner.
- General thinning: Thinning ratio depends on product temperature and working conditions. Add thinner only after mixing both components and avoid over-thinning.
Drying and pot life
At approx. 65% relative air humidity and 1 mil dry film thickness (values are indicative and depend on ventilation and film build):
- Dust dry:
- 50°F (10°C): 5 hours
- 59°F (15°C): 3 hours
- 68°F (20°C): 2 hours
- 77°F (25°C): 1 hour
- Sandable / recoatable:
- 50°F (10°C): 48 hours
- 59°F (15°C): 36 hours
- 68°F (20°C): 24 hours
- 77°F (25°C): 20 hours
- Pot life after mixing:
- 50°F (10°C): 5 hours
- 59°F (15°C): 4 hours
- 68°F (20°C): 3 hours
- 77°F (25°C): 1.5 hours
Always allow each coat sufficient time to dry and do not apply wet-on-wet.
Application conditions
- Application temperature (surface and product): minimum 50°F (10°C), maximum 86°F (30°C).
- Relative air humidity: minimum 50%, maximum 75%.
- Recommended tools: Long-haired soft brush, high-quality roller, or spray equipment (see spray guidelines below).
- Environment: Avoid direct sunlight, strong wind and large temperature differences between product, substrate and working area.
Coverage
- Theoretical coverage: approx. 150 ft² per liter at 1.5 mil dry film thickness.
- Practical coverage: Dependent on substrate condition, application method, object shape and working conditions.
