description

What is PropOne 1 L and why choose it?

PropOne 1 L is a complete two-coat marine coating system for propellers and underwater running gear. The kit includes an anti-corrosive Primer Coat (with Primer Activator) and a biocide-free Clear Coat foul release coating. The Clear Coat has a low surface energy that reduces the ability of marine organisms to strongly adhere to metal surfaces permanently immersed in water. When the vessel is driven, the movement of water helps dislodge the fouling mechanically, without releasing biocides into the environment.

This 1 litre kit is designed to provide sufficient product to coat approximately 3.8 m² of running gear and is suitable for ferrous and non-ferrous marine alloys, including aluminium. It is not suitable for aquaculture applications and must not be applied to anodes.

Main features

  • Two-coat protective system: Anti-corrosive Primer Coat plus Clear Coat foul release coating.
  • Biocide-free foul release: Clear Coat prevents strong adhesion of organisms via low surface energy rather than chemical poisoning of the environment.
  • Mechanical self-cleaning effect: When the boat is placed in drive, water flow helps remove colonising organisms from coated surfaces.
  • Coverage optimised for running gear: 1 litre kit covers about 3.8 m², with separate coverage rates for primer and clear coat.
  • Compatible substrates: Suitable for all ferrous and non-ferrous marine alloys, including aluminium.
  • Controlled VOC formulation: Primer and Clear Coat have defined emitted VOC levels.
  • Defined curing and immersion times: Clear Coat touch dry in about 1 hour at 20 °C and 55 % RH; system can be immersed after specified curing times.
  • Detailed application method: Clear procedures for surface preparation, mixing, and application by brush or roller.

Technical characteristics

Applications and use cases

PropOne 1 L is intended for propellers and underwater running gear that remain permanently immersed and operate at speed. Typical coated components include:

  • Propeller blades and hubs.
  • Rudders.
  • Propeller shaft struts.
  • Trim tabs.

The coating can be used on both ferrous and non-ferrous marine alloys, including aluminium. It is not suitable for aquaculture applications and must not be applied to sacrificial anodes.

Surface preparation

  • Remove marine growth, old coatings, rust and corrosion by brushing with stiff fibre or wire brushes, abrading with emery cloth or mechanical abrasion discs, or scraping with an appropriate tool.
  • Remove loose contaminants by brushing, wiping with a clean cloth, blowing off with clean dry air, or vacuum cleaning.
  • Clean metal with Prop Wash using a clean cloth, working one area at a time and rinsing immediately with fresh water. Wipe with a clean damp white cloth until no discolouration appears.
  • Wipe all surfaces with a clean cloth soaked in acetone.
  • Inspect the surface and correct any unsatisfactory areas before coating. Apply the PropOne system immediately after cleaning.

Mixing and application

Primer mixing

  • Ensure Primer Coat and Primer Activator are between 10–30 °C when mixing.
  • Thoroughly mix the Primer Coat to fully disperse settled pigments.
  • Add one full bottle of Primer Activator to one full can of Primer while mixing; mix for a further 2 minutes, then replace the lid and shake for 2 minutes.
  • In hot or breezy conditions where rapid solvent evaporation is likely, up to 25 % isopropanol by volume (relative to the primer in the can) may be mixed into the primer before adding the activator.

Primer application

  • Apply sparingly by brush or roller (brush preferred for complex geometry).
  • Use clean, dry brushes.
  • On propellers, begin at the hub and work outwards to blade edges, always brushing from the centre towards the edge to minimise runs.
  • Apply only thin coats; do not apply as a thick film.
  • Allow each coat to reach touch-dry, then apply the next thin coat quickly to avoid softening the previous layer.
  • As soon as the primer is touch-dry, apply the Clear Coat.

Clear Coat application

  • Apply using a brand new, soft, clean brush.
  • Apply generously, working systematically from centre to edges, ensuring all primered areas are fully covered.
  • Apply one coat only of Clear Coat.
  • Check carefully for runs and drips.
  • Do not allow any contact with the uncured Clear Coat for at least 12 hours.

Cleaning of tools

  • Primer: Clean tools and equipment immediately after use with acetone.
  • Clear Coat: Clean tools and equipment with xylene.

FAQ

1. What area can I cover with the PropOne 1 L kit?

The 1 litre kit is designed to cover approximately 3.8 m² of running gear, based on 2 coats of Primer Coat and 1 coat of Clear Coat.

2. On which materials can PropOne be used?

The system is suitable for use on all ferrous and non-ferrous marine alloys, including aluminium. It must not be applied to anodes.

3. Does the Clear Coat stop marine growth completely?

No. As with all foul release coatings, surfaces can be colonised when the boat is not in use. Fouling is removed mechanically when the vessel is driven and water moves across the coated surfaces. The Clear Coat does not prevent growth by chemically poisoning the environment.

4. How long must I wait before immersing the coated gear?

At 55 % relative humidity, the minimum time to immersion is approximately 16 hours at 10 °C and 12 hours at 20 °C. Lower temperatures or humidity extend cure time.

5. How long is the mixed primer usable?

The pot life of the mixed Primer (Primer Coat plus Primer Activator) is approximately 4 hours at 25 °C.

6. Can I roll the primer instead of brushing it?

Yes. Rolling may be used on large, flat surfaces, although brushing is generally preferred, particularly for propeller hubs and blades.

7. How should I prepare the metal before coating?

Remove marine growth and old coatings mechanically, then clean thoroughly using Prop Wash and fresh water, followed by a wipe with acetone. Coat immediately after preparation.

8. Is PropOne suitable for aquaculture equipment?

No. The documentation specifies that the product is not suitable for aquaculture applications.

9. At what temperatures should I store the kit?

PropOne components should be stored between 5–27 °C (40–80 °F) in a dry, well-ventilated area.
