description

What is Interbond 808 Part A Indivisible Kit and why choose it?

Interbond 808 Part A Indivisible Kit is the aluminium base component of Interbond 808, a light-coloured, tar-free, surface-tolerant, two-pack epoxy anticorrosive coating with high volume solids (82%). Designed for demanding marine environments, it can be applied as a one- or two-coat system over grit blasted, hydroblasted or mechanically cleaned steel and is tolerant of damp (not wet) substrates. Its high-build formulation and resistance to immersion make it suitable for water ballast tanks, cofferdams, void and wet spaces, bilges and crude oil tanks in maintenance and repair or on-board maintenance operations.

Main features

  • Two-pack high-solids epoxy with 82% ±2% volume solids (ISO 3233:1998), reducing solvent emissions and enabling high film builds.
  • Tar-free, light-coloured and surface-tolerant, suitable for application over properly prepared but not pristine steel surfaces.
  • High-build protection with a typical dry film thickness of 300 microns (366 microns wet) in a single coat.
  • Damp-surface tolerant: can be applied to damp but drying substrates where standing water is absent.
  • Application flexibility: designed primarily for airless spray, with brush application recommended for small areas and touch-up.
  • Certified for food contact – carriage of grain (NOHH) when used as part of an approved coating scheme.
  • Internal and external use as a two-component coating for professional, industrial and on-board maintenance work.
  • Aluminium first-coat option: when used as a two-coat scheme, Interbond 808 Aluminium is specified as the first coat to enhance performance.

    • Minimum fluid pressure at tip: 190–246 kg/cm² (2700–3500 psi).
  • Brush: small areas only; multiple coats may be needed to achieve specified thickness.
  • Roller: Not recommended.
  • Thinner: International GTA220. Thinning is normally not required; do not exceed limits set by local environmental legislation.
  • Cleaner: International GTA822 or GTA220.
  • Mixing procedure:
    1. Agitate Base (Part A) thoroughly with a power agitator.
    2. Add the entire contents of Curing Agent (Part B) to Part A.
    3. Mix thoroughly using a power agitator until homogeneous.
    4. Use the mixed unit within the specified pot life; do not reseal mixed units.

Substrate preparation

  • General: coat only clean surfaces. Remove grease, oil, soluble contaminants and other foreign matter by solvent cleaning (SSPC-SP1).
  • Major refurbishment:
    • Abrasive blast to Sa2 (ISO 8501-1:2007) or hydroblast to International Paint standard HB2M/H (fresh-water wash after abrasive blasting).
    • Slurry blasting to International Paint SB2M/H may be used for above-water and topside areas only.
  • Repair/On-board maintenance (OBM):
    • Mechanically clean corroded areas to St3 (ISO 8501-1:2007) or hydroblast to HB2M/H.
    • Abrade surrounding intact coating and feather edges.
    • Slurry blasting to SB2M/H allowed for above-water and topside areas.
  • Overcoating aged coatings: large areas of aged two-component coatings must be high-pressure fresh-water washed prior to application. Interbond 808 must not be used to maintain or overcoat one-component ballast tank coatings.
  • Two-coat scheme: when Interbond 808 is used as a two-coat system, Interbond 808 Aluminium must always be applied as the first coat.
  • Alternative North American standards: SSPC-SP6 may be used instead of Sa2; SSPC-SP3 or SSPC-SP11 instead of St3.

Environmental and application limits

  • Minimum steel temperature for curing: 5°C. The product will not cure adequately below this temperature.
  • Maximum substrate temperature: 40°C.
  • Damp-surface tolerance: may be applied to damp but drying surfaces. Do not apply over pools or droplets of water. A simple test: draw a "V" with a finger; if water beads at the bottom, the surface is wet (not suitable for coating).
  • Immersion curing: once applied and allowed to cure to the specified “before flooding” interval, the coating will continue curing under water. Early immersion can slow cure and may lead to a soft film.
  • Curing agent storage: may become cloudy below 5°C; warming above 5°C restores clarity without affecting performance.
  • Recommended material temperature for application: 25–30°C for optimum application properties.

Applications and use cases

  • Water ballast tanks: high-build anticorrosive protection in aggressive, cyclic immersion conditions.
  • Cofferdams and void spaces: corrosion control in difficult-to-access spaces where surface preparation may be limited.
  • Wet spaces and bilges: suitable for constantly damp or intermittently flooded areas.
  • Crude oil tanks: internal corrosion protection when used within approved coating schemes.
  • Maintenance and repair: ships in dry dock or at berth requiring refurbishment of existing two-pack epoxy systems.
  • On-board maintenance (OBM): localized repairs and touch-ups using brush and airless spray on suitably prepared surfaces.

Section 8 – Individual protection measures

The following information is based on the Safety Data Sheet for Interbond 808 Aluminium Part A and applies to professional and industrial users.

  • General engineering controls: use only with adequate ventilation. Apply local exhaust ventilation or process enclosure to keep airborne concentrations below regulatory limits and below the lower explosive limit. Use explosion-proof ventilation equipment.
  • Hygiene measures: wash hands, forearms and face thoroughly after handling and before eating, drinking or smoking. Contaminated work clothing should not leave the workplace and must be washed before reuse. Ensure eyewash stations and safety showers are close to the work area.
  • Eye/face protection: chemical splash goggles conforming to an approved standard whenever there is a risk of splashes, mists or vapors.
  • Hand protection:
    • Wear chemical-resistant, impervious gloves complying with EN 374 or equivalent.
    • For prolonged or frequently repeated contact: gloves with protection class 6 (breakthrough time > 480 min). Recommended materials: Viton or nitrile, thickness ≥ 0.38 mm.
    • For brief contact: gloves with protection class ≥ 2 (breakthrough time > 30 min). Recommended material: nitrile, thickness ≥ 0.12 mm.
    • Replace gloves regularly and if any damage or degradation is observed.
  • Body protection: select protective clothing based on task and risks. Where ignition from static electricity is possible, wear antistatic protective clothing (coveralls, boots and gloves) compliant with EN 1149.
  • Other skin protection: wear appropriate chemical-resistant footwear and additional protective garments as required by the specific job and risk assessment.
  • Respiratory protection: where ventilation is inadequate or exposure cannot be adequately controlled, wear a respirator conforming to EN140 fitted with an A/P2 filter or better. A structured respiratory protection programme is required to ensure correct selection, fitting and training.
  • Special operations: dry sanding, flame cutting or welding of the dry paint film can generate hazardous dust and fumes. Use wet methods where possible; otherwise, provide local exhaust ventilation and suitable respiratory protection.
