description

What is BOATGUARD 100 and why choose it

BOATGUARD 100 from International Náutica is a polishing antifouling coating designed to protect boat hulls against fouling organisms such as slime, aquatic plants and marine animals. Suitable for professional application on vessels operating in both fresh and salt water, it provides effective protection for up to one year and can be applied up to six months before launching. Its polishing action helps maintain a smooth hull surface for efficient performance during the whole season.

Main features

  • Professional polishing antifouling for boats in fresh and salt water.
  • Effective against fouling caused by organisms, slime, aquatic plants and animals.
  • Season-long protection of up to 12 months under normal service conditions.
  • Flexible application window: can be applied up to 6 months before the boat is launched.
  • Wide colour range: Dover White (YBP000), Red (YBP001), Blue (YBP002), Navy (YBP003) and Black (YBP004).
  • Matt finish that provides a uniform, low-gloss appearance under the waterline.
  • High solids content (51% by volume, average) for durable film build and coverage.
  • Easy application by airless spray (professional only), brush or roller.
  • Compatible with common boatbuilding substrates: GRP, wood, steel/iron and lead (not suitable on aluminium or zinc-coated surfaces).
  • Can be applied over most existing antifoulings that are in good condition, except VC17m/PTFE-based products.

    • 35°C: 20 minutes
  • Maximum time before immersion: up to 6 months between 5°C and 35°C.

Recoat intervals with BOATGUARD 100

Minimum times before overcoating with BOATGUARD 100, according to substrate temperature:

  • 5°C: minimum 16 hours
  • 15°C: minimum 10 hours
  • 23°C: minimum 6 hours
  • 35°C: minimum 4 hours

Recommended film thickness and coverage

  • Number of coats with brush/roller: 2 coats giving a total dry film thickness (DFT) of 100 microns for 12 months protection.
  • Number of coats with spray: 1 coat at 100 microns DFT for 12 months protection.
  • Recommended DFT per coat:
    • Brush/roller: 50 microns dry per coat
    • Airless spray: 100 microns dry in a single coat
  • Recommended WFT per coat:
    • Brush/roller: 98 microns wet per coat
    • Airless spray: 196 microns wet in a single coat
  • Theoretical coverage:
    • Brush/roller: 10 m²/L
    • Airless spray: 5 m²/L
  • Practical coverage (depending on surface, conditions and application method):
    • Brush/roller: 9 m²/L
    • Airless spray: 3 m²/L

Compatible substrates and systems

  • Suitable substrates: GRP (fibreglass), wood, steel/iron and lead.
  • Not suitable for: aluminium or aluminium alloys, and zinc-coated surfaces.
  • Over existing antifoulings: can be applied directly over most antifoulings in good condition, except VC17m and PTFE-based antifoulings.
  • Primers on new or bare substrates:
    • Untreated fibreglass: Gelshield 200 for osmosis prevention, or Primocon.
    • Steel/iron/lead/wood: Interprotect or Primocon.

Applications and use cases

Typical applications

  • Professional antifouling protection for sailing yachts and motorboats in marinas, coastal waters and inland waterways.
  • Vessels operating in either fresh or salt water that require up to one year of fouling protection.
  • Boats that are hauled out over winter and relaunched within six months of application.

Surface preparation

  • Previously antifouled surfaces in good condition:
    • Remove all fouling and contamination completely, including the leached layer.
    • Wash with fresh water at high pressure (around 3000 psi / 207 bar).
    • Scrape and wet sand with P80–P120 abrasive. Do not dry sand.
    • If the existing antifouling is incompatible or unknown, seal it with a suitable International barrier/sealer coat.
  • Previously antifouled surfaces in poor condition:
    • Remove all traces of old antifouling using Interstrip.

Application guidance

  • Mixing: Stir thoroughly before use until a completely uniform consistency is obtained.
  • Thinning: Thinning is not recommended. The antifouling performance may be affected if the correct dry film thickness is not achieved.
  • Cleaner: YTA085 Thinner No. 3 International for antifoulings.
  • Application methods:
    • Airless spray (professional use only): pressure 176–210 bar (2500–3050 psi); tip size 517–521.
    • Brush.
    • Roller.
  • Ventilation and humidity control: ensure adequate ventilation during use.
  • Sanding: antifoulings must only be wet sanded. Never dry sand or burn off antifoulings. The true colour will appear after immersion.
  • Extra protection areas: apply an additional reinforcing coat on high-erosion zones such as leading edges of the hull, keel and rudder, stern gear and sharp edges.
  • Temperature conditions:
    • Ambient temperature during application should be between 5°C and 35°C.
    • Substrate temperature should be at least 3°C above the dew point and below 35°C.
  • High-speed operation: on boats that regularly exceed 30 knots, premature wear of the coating may be observed.

FAQ

  1. How long does BOATGUARD 100 protect my boat?

When applied at the recommended film thickness, BOATGUARD 100 provides antifouling protection for up to 12 months under normal operating conditions.

  2. Can I apply BOATGUARD 100 long before launching?

Yes. The coating can be applied up to 6 months before launching, provided the boat is stored correctly and the surface remains clean.

  3. On which substrates can I use this antifouling?

It is suitable for GRP (fibreglass), wood, steel/iron and lead. It must not be used on aluminium or aluminium alloys, nor on zinc-coated surfaces.

  4. Can I apply it over my existing antifouling?

It can be applied directly over most existing antifoulings in good condition, except VC17m and PTFE-based antifoulings. Surfaces must be properly cleaned and prepared.

  5. How many coats do I need?

With brush or roller, apply two coats to achieve a total of 100 microns dry film thickness. With professional airless spray, one 100-micron coat is sufficient.

  6. What is the recommended coverage per litre?

The theoretical coverage is about 10 m²/L with brush or roller and 5 m²/L with airless spray. Practical coverage is typically around 9 m²/L (brush/roller) or 3 m²/L (spray), depending on conditions and technique.

  7. Do I need a primer before applying BOATGUARD 100?

On bare substrates, a suitable primer is required. Use Gelshield 200 or Primocon on untreated fibreglass, and Interprotect or Primocon on steel, iron, lead or wood.

  8. Can I sand this antifouling?

You may only sand it wet. Dry sanding or burning off antifoulings is not allowed.

  9. What cleaner should I use for tools and equipment?

Use YTA085 Thinner No. 3 International for cleaning tools and equipment after application.

  10. Are there any temperature limits for application?

Yes. Apply only when ambient temperature is between 5°C and 35°C and the substrate is at least 3°C above the dew point and below 35°C.
