Applications and use cases

Typical substrates

  • Metal substrates
    • For optimum mechanical strength and corrosion resistance, prepare the surface correctly and prime with ALEXSEAL Protective Primer 161.
    • Super Fair 212 may be applied directly to ALEXSEAL Protective Primer 161 without sanding for up to 6 months.
  • GRP substrates
    • Use ALEXSEAL Super Build 302, Finish Primer 442 or Protective Primer 161 over a properly prepared GRP surface.
    • All ALEXSEAL Primers (except 161, see 161 overcoat information) should be sanded with P60–P80 after overnight dry before applying Super Fair 212.
  • Other substrates including epoxy resins: Contact your ALEXSEAL representative for specific recommendations.

Surface preparation

  • Substrate must be clean, dry and free from dust, grease, oil and other contamination.
  • For optimum adhesion, grind and/or blast the substrate with 36–60 grit before priming.
  • Full fairing systems require a heavily abraded substrate.
  • Thin fairing systems < 3 mm (approx. 1/8–0.012 inch) require a less aggressive profile.

Application method

  • Recommended tools: Trowels, spatulas, straight-edge materials.
  • Components have different colors to visually control mixing; the mixed filler must be a completely homogeneous color.
  • Mix mechanically with slow-turning dough mixers or manually. Do not use drill mixers.
  • Avoid introducing air bubbles during mixing.
  • Apply in thin layers with a spatula or trowel, working up to the desired thickness; pull off excess with a straight edge to avoid air pockets.
  • Tool cleaning: Use R4042 ALEXSEAL Epoxy Primer Reducer.

Sanding and overcoating

  • Block sand ALEXSEAL Super Fair 212 with P36–P120 grit.
  • Finishing with P80 grit or finer helps prevent sand scratch print-through in the final system.
  • Recoating Super Fair 212 over itself should follow minimum dry-to-sand times; scratch sand with P36–P60 for good intercoat adhesion.
  • Overcoating with other ALEXSEAL products (302, 303, 328, 442) can be done after the minimum time and after block sanding with P36–P120 grit.

FAQ – ALEXSEAL Super Fair 212 Thick Base

  1. Can Super Fair 212 Thick Base be used below the waterline?

Yes. It can be used above and below the waterline, but when used below the waterline it must be sealed with ALEXSEAL Finish Primer 442.

  2. What is the correct mixing ratio for Super Fair 212 Thick Base?

The mixing ratio is 1:1 by volume and 1:1 by weight between the base and the appropriate converter (C2127 Standard or C2128 Fast Converter). The product must not be reduced.

  3. Which tools should I use to apply this filler?

Use trowels, spatulas or straight-edge materials. Drill mixers are not recommended for mixing the components.

  4. How do I know if the product is mixed properly?

The base and converter have different colors to help control the process. After thorough mixing, the filler should show a completely homogeneous gray color.

  5. What sanding grit is recommended before overcoating?

Block sand Super Fair 212 with P36–P120 grit. Finishing with P80 grit or finer is recommended to minimize sand scratch marks in the final finish.

  6. What environmental conditions are recommended during application?

The optimal range is 15–30 °C (60–85 °F) and 40–80% relative humidity. Use the Fast Converter below 15 °C and do not apply below 10 °C or above 40 °C.

  7. How should equipment be cleaned after use?

Clean application tools with R4042 ALEXSEAL Epoxy Primer Reducer.

  8. Which primers are compatible on metal substrates?

ALEXSEAL Protective Primer 161 is recommended. Super Fair 212 may be applied directly to this primer without sanding for up to six months.
