Surface preparation

Previously varnished wood

  • In good condition:
    • Clean the surface with thinners.
    • Sand smooth with 280–320 grade abrasive paper.
    • Remove sanding dust with thinners.
  • In poor condition:
    • Remove all previous coatings before recoating with GOLDSPAR SATIN.

Bare wood

  • Ensure the surface is thoroughly degreased and clean.
  • Sand smooth with 80–180 grade paper, then finish with 280 grade paper.
  • Remove sanding dust by brushing, dusting or wiping.
  • If wiping with solvent, allow the surface to dry completely before applying the first coat.
  • Priming bare wood: thin the first coat of GOLDSPAR SATIN by 10–15% with Thinner No.1.

Application methods

  • Brush: Recommended for most work and to lay off roller- or spray-applied coats.
  • Roller: After rolling, immediately lay off with a brush or pad to avoid trapping air bubbles.
  • Airmix spray (professional use only):
    • Pressure: 2 bar
    • Tip size: 06–113
  • Airless spray (professional use only):
    • Pressure: 176–210 bar
    • Tip size: 1365–1580
  • Conventional spray (professional use only):
    • Pressure: 2–3 bar
    • Tip size: 1.1–1.4 mm
    • Thin 25–30% with Thinner No.3.

Thinning, mixing and between-coat preparation

  • Mixing: Stir well before use.
  • Thinners: Use only the recommended thinners.
    • Thinner No.1
    • Thinner No.3
  • Cleaner: Thinner No.1.
  • Between coats: For best results, sand lightly between coats with 320–400 grade paper.
  • Avoid using the product direct from the can; pour the amount required into a separate container.

Application conditions

  • Use above the waterline only.
  • Avoid painting in direct sunlight.
  • Product temperature: minimum 15°C and maximum 35°C.
  • Ambient temperature: minimum 5°C (41°F) and maximum 35°C (95°F).

Section 8 – Personal protective measures

Exposure controls and personal protection

GOLDSPAR SATIN is a flammable, solvent-borne coating containing substances classified as hazardous, including butanone oxime. It may cause cancer (Carc. 1B, H350) and repeated exposure may cause skin dryness or cracking. The product is restricted to professional users. Appropriate engineering controls and personal protective equipment are essential.

Engineering controls and hygiene measures

  • Use only with adequate ventilation. Employ process enclosures and local exhaust ventilation to keep airborne concentrations below recommended or statutory limits and below lower explosive limits.
  • Use explosion-proof ventilation and electrical equipment.
  • Wash hands, forearms and face thoroughly after handling, before eating, smoking or using the lavatory, and at the end of the working period.
  • Use appropriate techniques to remove potentially contaminated clothing and wash contaminated clothing before reuse.
  • Ensure that eyewash stations and safety showers are close to the work area.

Eye and face protection

  • Wear safety eyewear complying with an approved standard when risk assessment indicates potential exposure to liquid splashes, mists, gases or dusts.
  • If contact is possible, use safety glasses with side-shields or higher protection as indicated by the risk assessment.

Hand protection

  • Use chemical-resistant, impervious gloves complying with EN374 or an equivalent approved standard whenever handling the product if indicated by risk assessment.
  • For prolonged or frequently repeated contact, use gloves with protection class 6 (breakthrough time > 480 minutes, EN374). Recommended materials:
    • Viton
    • Nitrile, thickness ≥ 0.38 mm
  • For brief contact, use at least protection class 2 gloves (breakthrough time > 30 minutes, EN374). Recommended:
    • Nitrile, thickness ≥ 0.12 mm
  • Regularly replace gloves and change them immediately if damage, degradation or breakthrough is detected.

Skin and body protection

  • Select protective clothing based on the specific task and risks, and have it approved by a specialist before use.
  • When there is a risk of ignition from static electricity, wear anti-static protective clothing. For maximum protection, clothing should include anti-static overalls, boots and gloves (see EN 1149 for design and test requirements).
  • Choose appropriate footwear and any additional skin protection measures according to the operation being performed.

Respiratory protection

  • Based on hazard and exposure potential, select a respirator meeting the appropriate standard or certification and use it as part of a respiratory protection program.
  • Wear a respirator conforming to EN140 with a type A/P2 filter or better when ventilation is inadequate.
  • Dry sanding, flame cutting and welding of the dry paint film generate dust and/or hazardous fumes; use wet sanding/flatting wherever possible. If exposure cannot be prevented by local exhaust ventilation, wear suitable respiratory protection.

Environmental exposure controls

  • Check emissions from ventilation and process equipment to ensure compliance with environmental protection legislation.
  • Where necessary, use fume scrubbers, filters or engineering modifications to reduce emissions to acceptable levels.
