description

What is ALEXSEAL Fairing Compound 202 Base and why choose it?

ALEXSEAL Fairing Compound 202 Base is a solvent-free, epoxy-based, lightweight filler specifically developed for professional yacht fairing and filling. It offers excellent application, sanding and anti-sagging properties, cures without shrinking and creates a smooth, stable surface for subsequent ALEXSEAL Yacht Coating primers and topcoats. It can be used both above and below the waterline when correctly sealed.

Main features

  • Epoxy, solvent-free formulation for minimal shrinkage and high dimensional stability.
  • Lightweight fairing compound ideal for full fairing or spot repairs on yachts and other correctly prepared substrates.
  • Excellent anti-sagging behavior, allowing application at higher film builds without running.
  • Easy to mix and apply with trowel or spatula; contrasting component colors help control mixing quality.
  • Outstanding sanding properties with recommended block sanding from P36 to P120 grit.
  • 100% volume solids (catalyzed, without reduction) for predictable, high-build fairing.
  • Suitable above and below the waterline when overcoated correctly (below waterline must be sealed with ALEXSEAL Finish Primer 442).
  • Professional system integration with ALEXSEAL primers such as Protective Primer 161, Super Build 302, Finish Primer 442 and others.

Coverage

  • Volume solids (catalyzed, no reduction): 100%
  • Theoretical coverage: 1 m²/l (3.8 m²/gal, 41 sq. ft./gal) at approx. 1 mm dry film thickness.
  • Typical practical coverage at average thickness:
    • 6 mm (1/4"): 0.15 m²/l (0.6 m²/gal; 6.4 sq. ft./gal)
    • 8 mm (3/8"): 0.11 m²/l (0.44 m²/gal; 4.8 sq. ft./gal)
    • 10 mm (1/2"): 0.07 m²/l (0.29 m²/gal; 3.2 sq. ft./gal)

Substrate preparation

  • Substrate must be clean, dry and free of dust, grease, oil and other contamination.
  • For optimum adhesion, grind and/or blast with P36–P60 grit before priming.
  • Full fairing systems require a heavily abraded substrate; thin systems (< 3 mm) require a less aggressive profile.
  • Metal substrates: prime with ALEXSEAL Protective Primer 161. Fairing Compound 202 can be applied directly over 161 without sanding for up to 6 months.
  • GRP substrates: use ALEXSEAL Super Build 302, Finish Primer 442 or Protective Primer 161 over the prepared surface. All ALEXSEAL primers (except 161) should dry overnight, then be sanded with P60–P80 grit before application.

Applications and use cases

  • Yacht hull fairing above the waterline: Create smooth, fair surfaces before high-build or finish primers.
  • Below-waterline fairing: Fair and fill underwater areas, then seal with ALEXSEAL Finish Primer 442.
  • Spot repairs and re-fairing: Correct local defects on metal or GRP substrates already primed with compatible ALEXSEAL primers.
  • High-build profiling: Build up thickness (up to approx. 10 mm practical layers) while maintaining anti-sagging performance.
  • Multi-layer fairing systems: Recoat over itself after minimum dry-to-sand times, scratch sanding with P36–P60 grit for intercoat adhesion.

Application guidelines

Mixing and application

  • Use trowels, spatulas and straight-edge tools.
  • Components have different colors for visual control; after mixing the color must be homogeneous.
  • Mix mechanically with slow-turning dough mixers or manually. Do not use drill mixers.
  • Avoid entrapping air; do not introduce air bubbles into the mixture.
  • Apply in thin layers and work up to the desired thickness, then pull off excess material with a straight edge to minimize air pockets.
  • Clean application equipment with R4042 ALEXSEAL Epoxy Primer Reducer.
  • Block sand with P36–P120 grit; finishing with P80 or finer helps prevent sand-scratch print-through in subsequent coats.
  • Overcoat with compatible ALEXSEAL products such as 302, 303, 328, 357 or 442 after minimum dry-to-sand time and block sanding with P36–P120 grit.

Section 8 – Individual protection measures

Exposure controls and personal protective equipment

  • Ventilation: Provide good ventilation using local exhaust and general extraction.
  • Eye/face protection: Wear safety goggles to protect against liquid splashes.
  • Hand protection:
    • Use chemical-resistant protective gloves compliant with EN 374.
    • Recommended materials for short-term contact (splash protection): nitrile rubber or neoprene.
    • Minimum material thickness: > 0.4 mm.
    • Breakthrough time: > 480 min.
    • Replace gloves immediately if damaged or worn.
  • Skin and body protection: Wear work clothing as usual in the chemical industry; wash skin after contact and promptly clean contaminated areas.
