What is Sika Boom Polyurethane Foam and why choose it

Sika Boom® is a one-component, moisture-curing polyurethane foam supplied in aerosol cans. It is a high-expansion, multi-position foam (can be applied 360°) designed for fixing, filling and insulating. Once cured, it forms a rigid foam that provides thermal and acoustic insulation and helps to block air drafts around construction elements.

Its combination of fast curing, high expansion and easy application with the supplied adapter nozzle makes it a practical solution for professional installers and maintenance work where secure filling and insulation of gaps is required.

Main features

  • One-component polyurethane foam that cures with ambient humidity.
  • High expansion foam; expands approximately 1.5 to 2 times after application.
  • Multi-position application: can be used in all positions (360°).
  • Ready-to-use aerosol with adapter nozzle for simple application.
  • Good application performance even at low temperatures (from +5 °C support temperature; aerosol between +5 °C and +25 °C).
  • Fast curing: cuts after about 23 minutes and full cure in approximately 12 hours at 23 °C and 50 % relative humidity.
  • Good thermal insulation performance (thermal conductivity about 0.04 W/mK).
  • Helps reduce sound and noise transmission.
  • Resistant to ageing under normal conditions of use.
  • Propellant free of CFC.
  • Certified by TÜV according to PPP 53248B:2010 (gold valve).

    • 500 ml aerosol: approximately 24 litres (± 3 l).
    • 750 ml aerosol: approximately 37 litres (± 3 l).
  • Ambient temperature for application:
    • Optimum: +18 °C to +25 °C.
    • Permissible: −10 °C (min.) to +40 °C (max.).
  • Substrate temperature: Minimum +5 °C / maximum +35 °C.
  • Relative air humidity during application: 30 % to 95 %.
  • Touch dry time: Approximately 9 minutes at 23 °C / 50 % r.h.
  • Cutting time: Approximately 23 minutes at 23 °C / 50 % r.h.
  • Full curing: Approximately 12 hours at 23 °C / 50 % r.h.

Limitations and important notes

  • Aerosol temperature during use must be between +5 °C and +25 °C; for best workability approximately +20 °C.
  • Protect aerosol cans from temperatures above +50 °C and direct sunlight (risk of explosion).
  • The substrate should be slightly pre-moistened with clean water to ensure proper curing and to reduce secondary expansion.
  • Do not apply on polyethylene (PE), polypropylene (PP), PTFE (Teflon), silicones, oils, greases or other release agents.
  • The cured foam is not UV resistant and must be protected from direct sunlight.

Applications and use cases

  • Fixing and filling joints around window and door frames.
  • Filling and insulating service penetrations and pipe passages.
  • Sealing and insulating gaps for air-conditioning systems.
  • Filling cavities around roller shutter boxes and similar elements.
  • General-purpose gap filling where thermal and acoustic insulation and reduction of air drafts are required, within the stated substrate and temperature limitations.

Basic application method

  • Ensure substrates are clean, dry, homogeneous and free from loose particles, dust, grease or poorly adhering materials.
  • Slightly pre-wet the substrate with clean water.
  • Shake the Sika Boom® aerosol vigorously about 20 times.
  • Fit the extension tube to the aerosol valve without activating the valve.
  • Invert the can and apply in the required position; control the output by adjusting pressure on the valve.
  • Fill cavities in several layers, allowing each layer to cure or lightly moisten between passes to promote expansion.
  • Do not fill cavities completely, as the foam expands 1.5 to 2 times.
  • Elements to be fixed must be positioned and secured before the foam hardens.

Cleaning

  • Fresh, uncured foam residues should be removed immediately with Sika Boom® Cleaner.
  • Cured foam can only be removed by mechanical means.

FAQ

1. What type of product is Sika Boom Polyurethane Foam?

It is a one-component, moisture-curing polyurethane foam in an aerosol can, with high expansion and multi-position application capability.

2. What is Sika Boom used for?

It is used for fixing, filling and insulating joints and cavities, particularly around window and door frames, pipe penetrations, air-conditioning passages and shutter boxes, as well as for reducing air drafts, noise and heat loss.

3. How much foam does one can produce?

Approximately 24 litres of foam from a 500 ml can and about 37 litres from a 750 ml can, depending on conditions and application technique.

4. At what temperatures can I apply the foam?

The optimum ambient application temperature is between +18 °C and +25 °C. Application is permitted between −10 °C and +40 °C, with substrate temperatures between +5 °C and +35 °C. The aerosol itself should be between +5 °C and +25 °C.

5. How long does Sika Boom take to cure?

At 23 °C and 50 % relative humidity, the foam is touch dry in about 9 minutes, can be cut after roughly 23 minutes, and reaches full cure after about 12 hours.

6. Does the foam expand after application?

Yes. The foam expands approximately 1.5 to 2 times its original volume; cavities should therefore not be completely filled during application.

7. Is the cured foam UV resistant?

No. The foam is not UV resistant and must be protected from sunlight once cured.

8. On which substrates should Sika Boom not be used?

It should not be applied on polyethylene (PE), polypropylene (PP), PTFE (Teflon), silicones, oils, greases or other non-adhesive surfaces or release agents.

9. How can I clean uncured foam from tools and surfaces?

Fresh foam should be removed immediately using Sika Boom® Cleaner. Once cured, it can only be removed mechanically.

10. Is there any special handling precaution for the aerosol can?

Yes. The can is pressurised and extremely flammable. It must be protected from temperatures above 50 °C and from direct sunlight, and kept away from open flames and ignition sources.
