What is SEAJET 033 SHOGUN and why choose it?

SEAJET 033 SHOGUN from Seajet is a premium self polishing antifouling paint designed for high fouling areas. It provides highly effective protection against slime and weed for all types of pleasure craft up to 40 knots, when applied over suitably primed GRP, wood or steel. With up to two seasons from two coats and a maximum immersion time of 6 months after application, it offers long-lasting performance for boats that demand reliable underwater protection.

Main features

  • Premium self polishing antifouling – maintains an active, fresh surface to resist slime and weed.
  • High fouling protection – suitable for waters with intense fouling pressure.
  • For pleasure craft up to 40 knots – ideal for sailing and motor yachts with moderate to high speed.
  • Wide colour range – available in black, dark grey, mid blue, navy blue and red (also listed in some documents: light grey).
  • Multi-substrate use – for correctly primed GRP/FRP, wood and steel hulls.
  • Two-season system – two coats can provide protection for up to two seasons, depending on exposure and film build.
  • Professional or DIY application – can be applied by brush or roller; spray application is restricted to professional users.
  • Optimised film build – recommended 100 µm wet / 48 µm dry per coat for controlled polishing and coverage.
  • Compatible Seajet primers – designed to work with SEAJET 015 Underwater Primer and SEAJET 117 Multipurpose Epoxy Primer.

Surface preparation

  • Existing antifouling in good condition: High-pressure fresh water wash (approx. 200 bar) to remove fouling, contamination and the leached layer. Check Seajet compatibility table; if compatible, apply SEAJET 033 SHOGUN directly.
  • Existing antifouling in poor condition: Remove antifouling. Only wet sand or use chemical removal methods. Never dry sand or burn old antifouling.
  • Unknown or incompatible antifouling: After high-pressure washing, apply a barrier coat of SEAJET 015 Underwater Primer before SEAJET 033 SHOGUN.
  • GRP / FRP / Steel, bare: Sand with P100 abrasive, remove all dust, then apply SEAJET 117 Multipurpose Epoxy Primer (or SEAJET 015 according to the older technical sheet). Apply SEAJET 033 SHOGUN within the specified primer overcoating interval.
  • Wood, bare: Sand with P100 abrasive, remove dust, apply SEAJET 015 Underwater Primer, then SEAJET 033 SHOGUN.
  • Aluminium: Not suitable – do not apply SEAJET 033 SHOGUN on aluminium.
  • General: Ensure surfaces are dry and free from salt, grease, oil and other contaminants. Degrease where required.

Recommended system build

  • Pre-treatment and primer as specified for each substrate.
  • Apply two full coats of SEAJET 033 SHOGUN.
  • Apply an additional coat on leading edges, waterline, rudders and stern gear for enhanced protection.

Storage, shelf life and disposal

  • Storage: Store in a dry, cool, well-ventilated place away from direct sunlight, heat and ignition sources. Keep containers tightly closed and upright. Handle with care.
  • Shelf life: Minimum 2 years at 20 °C (unopened, correctly stored containers).
  • Disposal: Do not empty into drains. Dispose of paint and container at an authorised hazardous or special waste collection point, in accordance with local regulations.

Applications and use cases

  • Yachts and sailing boats operating in coastal and high-fouling marinas where long-term antifouling performance is required.
  • Motor cruisers and sport boats up to 40 knots that demand reliable fouling control without frequent lift-outs.
  • Seasonal and year-round moored craft in marinas, estuaries and harbours, where slime and weed growth is intense.
  • Repaint of existing antifouling systems when previous coatings are compatible or when a Seajet barrier primer is used.
  • Wooden, GRP and steel hull refits requiring a complete underwater paint system with Seajet primers and antifouling.
