description

What is Sikaflex 295 UV and why choose it?

Sikaflex 295 UV is a 1-component, moisture-curing polyurethane adhesive and exterior sealant specifically developed for bonding and sealing organic glazing (plastic windows) in marine applications. With excellent weathering resistance, strong elasticity and approvals for the marine OEM market and Wheelmark, it is designed to deliver durable, UV-resistant joints on boats and ships in the most exposed areas.

Main features

  • 1-component polyurethane – ready to use, cures with atmospheric moisture.
  • For organic glass – suitable for plastic glazing materials such as PC and PMMA.
  • Marine-grade performance – specially developed for the marine industry and compliant with IMO requirements.
  • Excellent application properties – good non-sag behaviour and paste-like consistency for overhead and vertical joints.
  • Weather and ageing resistant – ideal for exterior joints permanently exposed to sun, salt water and changing climates.
  • Interior and exterior use – for sealing and direct glazing applications inside and outside the vessel.
  • OEM and Wheelmark approved – accepted by marine original equipment manufacturers.
  • Paintable – can be overpainted before or after skin formation (compatibility tests required).

Technical specifications

  • Chemical base: 1-component polyurethane
  • Colour: Black, White
  • Cure mechanism: Moisture-curing
  • Density (uncured): approx. 1.3 kg/l
  • Non-sag properties: Good (thixotropic paste)
  • Application temperature (climate and product): +10 °C to +35 °C
  • Optimal substrate/adhesive temperature: +15 °C to +25 °C
  • Skin time (23 °C / 50 % r.h.): approx. 60 minutes
  • Open time (23 °C / 50 % r.h.): approx. 45 minutes
  • Shrinkage: approx. 1 %

  • Tensile strength: 2 MPa (CQP036-1 / ISO 527)
  • Elongation at break: 500 % (CQP036-1 / ISO 527)
  • Tear propagation resistance: 5 N/mm (CQP045-1 / ISO 34)
  • Service temperature range: -50 °C to +90 °C
  • Shelf life (unopened, stored below 25 °C): 12 months
  • Packaging: 300 ml cartridge; 400 ml and 600 ml unipack

Curing

  • Cure mechanism: reaction with atmospheric moisture.
  • At lower temperatures, lower air humidity slows down the curing speed.
  • For consistent bondline thickness, the adhesive should be applied as a triangular bead.

Chemical resistance

  • Generally resistant to: fresh water, seawater, diluted acids, diluted caustic solutions.
  • Temporarily resistant to: fuels, mineral oils, vegetable and animal oils and fats.
  • Not resistant to: organic acids, glycolic alcohol, concentrated mineral acids and caustic solutions, or solvents.

Applications and uses

Sikaflex 295 UV is designed primarily for professional users in the marine sector. Typical applications include:

  • Direct glazing of organic glass on boats and ships (PC, PMMA windows, hatches, skylights, portlights, etc.).
  • Sealing of plastic glazing joints exposed to UV radiation and harsh weather.
  • Sealing of exterior joints in highly exposed areas of the vessel due to its excellent weatherability.

Compatible substrates

  • Aluminium (bright or anodized)
  • GRP (polyester resin)
  • Stainless steel
  • Timber
  • 2-component coatings
  • Plastic glazing materials (PC, PMMA)

Substrates prone to stress cracking must be tested first on originals. The product is intended for experienced professional users; adhesion and compatibility must always be verified under real conditions.

Application guidelines (summary)

  • Surfaces must be clean, dry and free of grease, oil, dust and contaminants.
  • Follow the recommendations from the relevant Sika pretreatment chart for marine applications.
  • Condition the adhesive to ambient temperature for easier extrusion, especially in cold environments.
  • Apply using manual, pneumatic or electric piston guns, or suitable pump equipment.
  • Always assemble parts within the specified open time and never join parts after skin formation.
  • Tool and finish the joint within the skin time, preferably using Sika Tooling Agent N.

FAQ – Sikaflex 295 UV

  1. Is Sikaflex 295 UV suitable for bonding glass?

It is specifically developed for organic glass (plastic glazing such as PC and PMMA) in marine applications, not for standard mineral glass unless specified by the manufacturer and tested.

  2. Where can Sikaflex 295 UV be used on a boat?

It is used to bond and seal plastic windows, hatches and other glazing elements, and to seal exposed exterior joints where high UV and weather resistance are required.

  3. What is the recommended application temperature?

The adhesive can be applied between +10 °C and +35 °C, with an optimum substrate and product temperature between +15 °C and +25 °C.

  4. How long do I have to assemble parts after applying the bead?

At 23 °C and 50 % relative humidity, the open time is about 45 minutes. Parts must always be installed within this open time and before skin formation.

  5. Can Sikaflex 295 UV be painted?

Yes. It can be painted before or after skin formation. When painting after skin formation, pre-treat the joint surface with Sika Aktivator-100 or Sika Aktivator-205 and always carry out preliminary paint compatibility tests.

  6. How can uncured Sikaflex 295 UV be removed?

Uncured material can be removed from tools and equipment using Sika Remover-208 or another suitable solvent. Once cured, it can only be removed mechanically. Do not use solvents on skin.

  7. What is the shelf life of Sikaflex 295 UV?

The shelf life is 12 months when stored unopened below 25 °C.

  8. Is Sikaflex 295 UV approved for marine use?

Yes. It meets the requirements of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) and is Wheelmark and OEM-market approved.

  9. Is the product safe for consumer DIY use?

The product is intended for experienced professional users only and is not designed for consumer use.
