description

What is BOSTIK 2402 (Catalyst Base) and why choose it?

BOSTIK 2402 (Catalyst Base) is a solvent-based, two-part industrial adhesive system component based on polychloroprene rubber. Used together with Bostikure D curing agent, it forms a cold-curing adhesive that develops strong, resilient bonds with very good resistance to heat, water and humidity. Thanks to its reliable performance and good storage stability, it is suitable for demanding professional and industrial bonding operations.

Main features

  • Solvent-borne polychloroprene formulation designed for use with Bostikure D curing agent.
  • Strong bonds on compatible substrates when correctly mixed and applied.
  • Good resistance to water, humidity and elevated temperatures (up to approximately 90 °C in continuous service, higher for short periods).
  • Good storage stability in unopened original containers under recommended conditions.
  • Heat-resistant contact adhesive suitable for decorative laminated plastics when used as directed.
  • Approved for specialised aerospace-related uses in conjunction with BOSTIK 9252 PRIMER under UK Ministry of Defence Specification DTD900/4679A.
  • Mobile, off-white liquid that can be applied by brush, roller coater or serrated spreader.

Applications and uses

Recommended substrates

  • Natural rubber.
  • Polychloroprene, nitrile, butyl, Hypalon and polyurethane rubber surfaces.
  • Rigid PVC (non-plasticised).
  • Wood and certain decorative laminates.
  • Metal (for maximum adhesion, use with BOSTIK 9252 PRIMER).
  • Leather.
  • Certain decorative laminated plastics where heat resistance is required.

Typical industrial uses

  • General industrial rubber bonding.
  • Heat-resistant bonding of decorative laminates to suitable substrates.
  • Construction of inflatable products such as boats and balloons.
  • Bonding synthetic rubber de‑icer shoes to aircraft propeller blades (with BOSTIK 9252 PRIMER, under approved specifications).
  • Manufacture and repair of aircrew and survival clothing and inflatable equipment (in approved applications).

Important limitations

  • Not recommended for plasticised PVC due to possible plasticiser migration.
  • Reserved for industrial and professional users.

Surface preparation

  • Ensure all surfaces are dry, clean and free from grease.
  • For rubber, metal and similar substrates: clean with Bostik M501 Cleaner, abrade with clean emery cloth, then clean again with Bostik M501 to remove dust.
  • For wood and many decorative laminates: abrasion is not normally required but surfaces must be dry, clean and grease free; use Bostik Cleaner/Thinner M501 if necessary.

Adhesive preparation and mixing

  • Stir BOSTIK 2402 thoroughly so that any settled ingredients are fully re‑dispersed and no sediment remains at the bottom of the container.
  • Mix BOSTIK 2402 with Bostikure D curing agent for approximately 5 minutes.
  • Use either the supplied proportions or 100 parts adhesive to 6 parts curing agent by weight.

Application and bonding

  • Apply an even coat of the mixed adhesive to both mating surfaces by brush, roller coater or serrated spreader.
  • Allow to dry for 10–20 minutes or until it can be touched with the knuckles without transfer.
  • For maximum adhesion, use two thin coats: allow the first coat to dry 20–30 minutes, then apply the second coat and dry 10–20 minutes before bonding.
  • Bring surfaces together carefully, avoiding trapped air, and apply as much pressure as possible.
  • Bonded components can generally be handled within minutes; full cure typically takes 48 hours at ambient temperature.
  • For strongest adhesion to metals: stir BOSTIK 9252 PRIMER, brush on a thin even coat to the prepared metal, allow at least 1 hour to dry, then apply BOSTIK 2402.

Critical processing note

Take precautions to ensure that BOSTIK 2402, Bostikure D curing agent and the mixed uncured adhesive are not contaminated with water or water vapour, as this can significantly reduce bond strength.

Section 8 – Personal protective measures

BOSTIK 2402 (Catalyst Base) is classified as a highly flammable liquid that can cause skin and eye irritation, may cause allergic skin reactions and may cause drowsiness or dizziness. Appropriate personal protection is essential during handling and application.

Recommended engineering controls

  • Ensure adequate general and, where necessary, local exhaust ventilation, particularly in confined or enclosed areas.
  • Extract vapours and aerosols directly at the point of origin.

Individual protection equipment

  • Eye and face protection: Tight‑sealing safety goggles; use a face shield where splashing is possible.
  • Hand protection: Protective gloves. Breakthrough time depends on glove material, thickness and temperature.
  • Skin and body protection: Antistatic footwear and suitable work clothing; wear fire/flame‑resistant or flame‑retardant garments where appropriate.
  • Respiratory protection: If ventilation is insufficient, use suitable respiratory protection. For mists, sprays or aerosols, use personal respiratory protection with an organic vapour filter conforming to EN 14387.

Hygiene and handling precautions

  • Avoid breathing vapours or mists and avoid contact with skin, eyes and clothing.
  • Do not eat, drink or smoke while using the product.
  • Wash hands, face and exposed skin thoroughly after handling.
  • Remove contaminated clothing and wash before reuse; do not remove contaminated workwear from the workplace.

FAQ

  1. Is BOSTIK 2402 (Catalyst Base) a one-part or two-part adhesive?

It is part of a two-part, cold‑curing adhesive system and must be mixed with Bostikure D curing agent before use.

  2. Which materials can I bond with this product?

It can bond natural, polychloroprene, nitrile, butyl, Hypalon and polyurethane rubbers, rigid PVC, wood, certain decorative laminates, metals (with primer) and leather.

  3. Can I use it on plasticised PVC?

No. Use on plasticised PVC is not recommended due to the risk of plasticiser migration, which can weaken the bond.

The recommended ratio is 100 parts adhesive to 6 parts curing agent by weight, or as supplied in matched packs.

  5. How long can I use the mixed adhesive?

The typical pot life is 6–8 hours in a closed container, shorter in open containers and as the adhesive ages.

  6. When does the bond reach full strength?

Initial handling strength is reached within minutes, but full bond strength is typically achieved after 48 hours, continuing to build and reaching maximum strength within about 7 days.

  7. What temperature range can the finished bond withstand?

The adhesive bond generally resists temperatures from approximately −40 °C to +90 °C, and higher temperatures for short periods.

  8. How should the product be stored?

Store in tightly closed original containers in a cool, dry, well‑ventilated, flame‑proof area between 5 °C and 25 °C.

  9. How do I clean tools and excess adhesive?

Bostik M501 Cleaner can be used for tool cleaning, adhesive dilution and removal of surplus adhesive. It may attack some painted surfaces.

  10. Is this product suitable for consumer or DIY use?

No. It is reserved for industrial and professional use and should be handled only by trained personnel following the safety data sheet.
