What it is and why choose it

THINNER A CR / ACRI by Chugoku is a xylene-based thinner specifically designed for use with most chlorinated acrylic paints and antifouling coatings. Supplied as a clear, colourless liquid with a typical solvent odour, it is formulated to ensure proper application viscosity and flow while maintaining the performance of compatible marine and protective paint systems.

This thinner is suitable for a wide range of Chugoku products, including CMP AC, the ACRI series, SEA GRANDPRIX series, SEATENDER series and SEAFLO NEO series. When used as directed (usually not more than 5% addition), it helps optimise spray characteristics and surface appearance without compromising coating properties.

Main features

  • Xylene-based formulation for controlled thinning of compatible chlorinated acrylic and antifouling paints.
  • Wide product compatibility with selected Chugoku coating systems (CMP AC, ACRI, SEA GRANDPRIX, SEATENDER, SEAFLO NEO).
  • High solvent strength to adjust viscosity effectively with low addition levels (normally ≤ 5%).
  • Clear, colourless liquid that does not affect the colour of the paint.
  • Typical aromatic solvent odour for easy identification during use.
  • Flammable liquid and vapour (flash point approx. 25–26°C) requiring careful handling and storage.
  • High VOC content (theoretical 870 g/l) suitable for professional and industrial coating operations.
  • Formulated for European requirements; some physical properties may differ from the original Japanese data sheet to meet local regulations.

  • Kinematic viscosity (40°C): Approx. 1 mm²/s; non-Newtonian, thixotropic behaviour.
  • Water solubility: Not soluble in water.
  • Auto-ignition temperature (component): Approx. 488°C (reaction mass of ethylbenzene and xylene).
  • Vapour pressure (component): Approx. 8.21 mbar.
  • Relative vapour density (air=1): 1–2 (calculated).
  • Main solvent base: Reaction mass of ethylbenzene and xylene (approx. 95–100% of mixture).

Applications and use cases

  • Marine antifouling systems: Optimising application properties of Chugoku antifouling paints such as SEA GRANDPRIX, SEATENDER and SEAFLO NEO series.
  • Chlorinated acrylic finishes: Thinning CMP AC and ACRI series coatings for spray or brush application where viscosity adjustment is required.
  • Professional shipyard and industrial environments: Use in controlled spray booths or well-ventilated areas where solvent-based marine coatings are applied.
  • Viscosity adjustment for spraying: Improving atomisation, flow and levelling while respecting the guideline of adding no more than about 5% thinner to the paint.

FAQ

  1. What type of thinner is THINNER A CR / ACRI?

It is a xylene-based thinner formulated for use with selected chlorinated acrylic and antifouling paints from Chugoku.

  2. Which paints can I use it with?

It is recommended for CMP AC, ACRI series, SEA GRANDPRIX series, SEATENDER series and SEAFLO NEO series, and other compatible chlorinated acrylic or antifouling paints from Chugoku.

  3. How much thinner should I add to the paint?

As a rule, usually not more than 5% of thinner should be added to the paint.

  4. What is the appearance of the product?

It is a clear, colourless liquid with a typical aromatic solvent odour.

  5. Is THINNER A CR / ACRI flammable?

Yes. It is classified as a flammable liquid and vapour (Flam. Liq. 3) with a flash point around 25–26°C.

  6. What are the main health hazards?

It is harmful in contact with skin or if inhaled, causes skin and serious eye irritation, may cause respiratory irritation, may be fatal if swallowed and enters airways, and may cause damage to organs through prolonged or repeated exposure.

  7. Is it dangerous for the environment?

It is harmful to aquatic life with long lasting effects and should not be released into drains or watercourses.

  8. Can I use it in poorly ventilated spaces?

No. Adequate ventilation is required. If exposure limits may be exceeded, suitable respiratory protection must be worn.

  9. How should I store the product?

Store between 0°C and 40°C in a dry, well-ventilated place, in tightly closed containers, away from heat, sparks, open flames and oxidising, strongly acidic or strongly alkaline materials.

  10. Where can I find detailed health and safety information?

Detailed information is contained in the product Safety Data Sheet provided by Chugoku Paints B.V.

Section 8 – Personal protective measures

Personal Protection advice and additional information are given in the Safety Data Sheet. Minimum safety precautions when handling THINNER A CR / ACRI include:

  • General measures: Observe precautionary notices on the container. Provide adequate ventilation and avoid breathing vapours, spray mist or sanding dust. Keep away from heat, hot surfaces, sparks and open flames. No smoking.
  • Respiratory protection: If workers may be exposed above occupational exposure limits, use a respirator to EN 140 fitted with a combined particulate and vapour filter to EN 14387 with an assigned protection factor of at least 10 (e.g. A2P3). When working inside spray booths where ventilation is insufficient, use a compressed air-fed respirator during spraying and until vapour and particulate levels are below exposure limits.
  • Hand protection: Use chemical-resistant gloves tested to EN 374. Suitable materials include nitrile (good for spray application), polyethylene (PE), PVA and butyl/Viton gloves, with thickness and breakthrough times selected according to exposure duration as indicated in the Safety Data Sheet. Replace gloves regularly and immediately if damaged.
  • Eye and face protection: Wear safety eyewear to EN 166 designed to protect against liquid splashes.
  • Skin and body protection: Wear anti-static protective clothing made from natural fibre or high-temperature-resistant synthetic fibre. Avoid skin contact; remove contaminated clothing and wash skin thoroughly with soap and water.
  • Environmental protection: Prevent product from entering drains, sewers or watercourses.
