Applications and uses
SIKASIL WS-605 S is intended exclusively for use by experienced professional users.
Recommended areas of application
- Waterproofing and sealing applications where high durability is required under severe conditions.
- Sealant for structural glazing.
- Sealant for curtain wall façades.
- Sealant for window construction.
Substrate compatibility and limitations
- Good adhesion to glass, metals, painted and coated metals, plastics and wood.
- Do not use on pre-stressed polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) or polycarbonate elements that may fail by stress cracking.
- The compatibility of washers, hollow spacers, setting blocks and other accessory materials with SIKASIL WS-605 S must be checked in advance.
- Joints deeper than 15 mm should be avoided.
- When different sealants are used in the same joint, the first one must be fully cured before applying the next.
Guidelines for joint design and application
- Joints must be correctly dimensioned because modifications are not possible after construction.
- For optimum performance, joint width should be designed according to the sealant movement capability and the expected joint movement.
- Minimum joint depth: 6 mm.
- Recommended width-to-depth ratio: 2:1.
- Use closed-cell, compatible foam backer rods (for example, high-resilience polyethylene foam rods) to fill the joint where possible.
- For shallow joints where backer rod cannot be used, a polyethylene tape is recommended as a non-adhering backing to allow joint movement and silicone expansion.
Curing behaviour
- Cures by reaction with atmospheric moisture, starting at the surface and progressing towards the centre of the joint.
- Curing speed depends on relative humidity and temperature.
- At low temperatures, the moisture content in the air is lower and curing is slower.
- Do not heat above 50 °C to accelerate curing, as this may cause bubble formation.
Surface preparation and application method
- Substrates must be clean, dry and free of grease, oil and dust.
- Specific advice on surface pre-treatment is available from Sika Industry Technical Department.
- After proper preparation of substrates and joints, apply SIKASIL WS-605 S into the joint.
- Tooling and finishing must be performed within the skin formation time.
- When tooling fresh sealant, press it firmly against the joint flanks to ensure good wetting.
Cleaning
- Uncured SIKASIL WS-605 S can be removed from tools and equipment with Sika Remover-208 or another compatible solvent.
- Once cured, the material can only be removed mechanically.
- Hands and exposed skin should be washed immediately with Sika Handclean Towel or a suitable industrial hand cleaner and water.
- Do not use solvents for cleaning skin.
