description

What Sika® Primer-210 T is and why choose it

Sika® Primer-210 T is a low-viscosity, solvent-based epoxy resin primer designed to promote adhesion of Sikaflex® sealants and adhesives on non-porous substrates. Supplied as a clear liquid with a slight yellow tint, it forms a thin bonding layer between metals or certain plastics and the adhesive. It is especially suitable for professional applications where reliable, durable bonding performance is required on aluminium, galvanized steel sheets and selected plastics.

Main features

  • Solvent-based epoxy formulation: epoxy resin compound in solvent base for strong adhesion promotion.
  • Low-viscosity liquid: easy to apply by cloth or brush, allowing thin but continuous primer films.
  • Transparent, slightly yellow colour: facilitates visual control of coverage on metal and plastic surfaces.
  • Optimised for Sikaflex® products: improves adhesion of Sikaflex® sealants and adhesives on many metals, plastics and pre-primed substrates.
  • Fast drying: minimum drying time of approximately 30 minutes at 23 °C / 50 % r.h. before bonding.
  • Single-coat system: designed to be applied in one thin but sufficient coat.
  • Professional quality and environmental management: manufactured under ISO 9001 / 14001 quality and environmental protection systems.

Applications and use cases

Recommended substrates

  • Aluminium
  • Galvanized steel sheets
  • Certain plastics (after preliminary tests)
  • Pre-primed, non-porous substrates compatible with Sikaflex®

This primer is not suitable for porous surfaces.

Typical uses

  • Pre-treatment of metal components before bonding with Sikaflex® adhesives or sealing with Sikaflex® sealants.
  • Improving adhesion on metallic or plastic parts in industrial assembly and vehicle bodywork.
  • Bonding applications on aluminium and galvanized steel where improved long-term adhesion is required.

Application method (summary)

  1. Surface preparation
    • Surfaces must be clean, dry and free from dust, grease and other contaminants.
    • Pre-clean thoroughly with Sika® Cleaner-205 and allow to dry completely.
  2. Primer application
    • Apply a thin but sufficient coat of Sika® Primer-210 T using a brush, cloth or dedicated primer applicator.
    • Do not apply at temperatures below +10 °C or above +35 °C.
    • Apply only one coat, ensuring adequate film thickness and dense coverage.
  3. After application
    • Allow to dry for at least 30 minutes and no more than 24 hours (at 23 °C / 50 % r.h.) before bonding.
    • Immediately re-seal the container tightly after use.
    • Do not use this primer with low-viscosity Sikaflex® sealants.
    • Sika® Primer-210 T shows thermoplastic behaviour immediately after application; large bonded parts should not be exposed to temperatures above 40 °C until 3 days after bonding.
    • Discard any primer that has gelled or shows phase separation.

FAQ

1. On which substrates can Sika® Primer-210 T be used?

It is designed for aluminium, galvanized steel sheets, many metals, some plastics and pre-primed non-porous substrates before bonding or sealing with Sikaflex® products.

2. Can it be used on porous surfaces such as concrete or wood?

No. The technical data state that this primer is not suitable for use on porous surfaces.

3. What is the recommended application temperature range?

The application temperature should be between +10 °C and +35 °C.

4. How many coats are required?

Sika® Primer-210 T is intended to be applied in a single thin coat, ensuring that the film is continuous and sufficiently dense.

5. How long should I wait before bonding after applying the primer?

At 23 °C and 50 % relative humidity, the minimum drying time is about 30 minutes and the maximum open time is 24 hours.

6. How should the surfaces be cleaned before priming?

Surfaces must be clean, dry and free from dust and grease. They should be pre-cleaned with Sika® Cleaner-205 and allowed to dry completely before primer application.

7. What is the coverage of Sika® Primer-210 T?

The approximate consumption is 100 ml/m², depending on the nature of the substrate.

8. What is the shelf life and how should the product be stored?

When stored in sealed containers in a cool, dry place, the shelf life is 12 months.

9. When should the primer be discarded?

Any primer that has gelled or shows phase separation should be discarded.

Section 8 – Personal protective measures

Exposure controls and personal protection

  • Engineering controls: use only with adequate ventilation. Local exhaust or general ventilation should keep airborne concentrations below applicable occupational exposure limits and below the lower explosion limit. Use explosion-proof ventilation equipment.
  • General hygiene measures: avoid eating, drinking or smoking where the product is handled or stored. Wash hands, forearms and face thoroughly after handling and before breaks. Remove contaminated clothing and protective equipment before entering eating areas and wash them before reuse.

Eye and face protection

  • Use approved eye protection when a risk assessment indicates potential exposure to liquid splashes, mists or vapours.

Hand protection

  • Wear chemical-resistant, impermeable gloves complying with EN 374 when handling the product if required by risk assessment.
  • Suitable for short-term use or splash protection: butyl/nitrile rubber gloves (approx. 0.4 mm), breakthrough time < 30 min.
  • Suitable for prolonged exposure: Viton gloves (approx. 0.4 mm), breakthrough time > 30 min.
  • Contaminated gloves should be removed and disposed of.

Skin and body protection

  • Wear appropriate protective clothing selected according to task and risk level, for example protective workwear and suitable footwear.
  • Preventive skin protection with protective cream is recommended.

Respiratory protection

  • If ventilation is inadequate, wear respiratory protection with an organic vapour filter (Type A).
  • Filter selection must be based on known or expected exposure levels and the working limits of the selected respirator.

Environmental exposure controls

  • Emissions from ventilation or process equipment must be checked to ensure compliance with environmental protection regulations.
  • Avoid release to drains, surface water and soil; if contamination occurs, inform the relevant authorities.
