What SEAJET 120 UV VARNISH is and why choose it

SEAJET 120 UV VARNISH is a one-component, high gloss traditional tung oil varnish designed to protect and beautify wood surfaces. Formulated with UV absorbers, it provides longer service life for wood exposed to sunlight while delivering an excellent clear finish. Its simple application by air spray, brush or roller makes it suitable for both professional and demanding DIY use on marine and other wooden structures.

Main features

  • High gloss tung oil finish: traditional clear varnish that enhances the natural appearance of wood.
  • UV protection: contains UV absorbers to protect and prolong the life of the wood.
  • One-pack system: mono-component product; no mixing ratio calculations required.
  • Easy application: can be applied by air spray, brush or roller.
  • Suitable for above-water wood: recommended as abrasion-resistant varnish for wooden objects and areas of boats not permanently immersed in water.
  • High build potential: recommended wet film thickness of 100 µm (59 µm dry) with the possibility of multiple coats for a glass-like finish.
  • Excellent flow and levelling: designed to give a smooth, high-gloss surface.

Applications and use cases

Recommended substrates

  • Exterior and interior wood on boats that is not permanently immersed in water.
  • Wooden objects where a clear, high gloss, abrasion-resistant finish is required.

Surface preparation

  • Existing varnish in good condition:
    • Clean the surface.
    • Wash with fresh water and allow to dry.
    • Sand/flatten with P280–P400 abrasive paper.
    • Clean with a tack rag and apply 2 or more coats.
  • Surface in poor condition:
    • Remove old varnish by sanding or stripping.
  • Bare wood:
    • Sand along the grain with P80–P180, then P280–P400.
    • Remove all dust by wiping with thinner and allow to dry completely.
    • Apply first coat thinned 50% on bare wood, then successive coats with progressively lower thinning as specified above.
    • For glass-like finish, apply 5–6 additional coats.
    • Wet sand along the grain between coats with P320–P400 for best finish.

Application tips

  • Avoid application when it is windy, damp or in direct sunlight.
  • Dry mornings are indicated as ideal for application.
  • Ensure adequate ventilation during application and drying.

FAQ

  1. Is SEAJET 120 UV VARNISH a single-component product?

Yes. It is a one-pack (mono component) varnish; simply stir thoroughly before use until homogeneous.

  2. On which substrates can I use this varnish?

It is designed for wood substrates, including wooden areas of boats that are not permanently immersed in water and wooden objects requiring an abrasion-resistant clear finish.

  3. How many coats are recommended?

At least 2 coats are recommended on previously varnished surfaces in good condition. On bare wood you can apply an initial thinned coat followed by several additional coats; 5–6 extra coats can be used to obtain a glass-like finish.

  4. What thinner should I use and how much?

Use SEAJET THINNER U. For brush application thin 0–5%; for spray application 10–15%. On bare wood, the first coat is thinned 50%, the second 25%, the third 10%, and further coats about 5% if required.

  5. What are the ideal application conditions?

Apply between 5°C and 35°C ambient temperature with substrate temperature above 7°C and relative humidity up to 80% RH, avoiding wind, high humidity and direct sun.

  6. How long should I wait before recoating?

At 20°C and 40 µm dry film thickness, wait at least 24 hours before recoating. No maximum overcoating time is specified.

  7. How long does it take to dry?

At 20°C and 40 µm DFT, the varnish is surface dry in about 12 hours and hard dry in about 24 hours.

  8. How should I store the product when not in use?

Store containers tightly closed in a dry, cool and well ventilated place between 0°C and 40°C, away from heat sources and direct sunlight.

  9. Can I use this varnish in permanently immersed areas?

No. It is intended for wood areas that are not permanently immersed in water.

Section 8 – Individual protection measures

Engineering controls

  • Provide adequate general and local exhaust ventilation to keep solvent vapour and particulates below occupational exposure limits.
  • During spraying in spray booths, ventilation alone may not be sufficient; use suitable respiratory protection as specified below.

Respiratory protection

  • If workers may be exposed above exposure limits, use a respirator conforming to EN 140 fitted with a combined particulate and vapour filter to EN14387 with an assigned protection factor of at least 10 (e.g. A2P3).
  • For work inside spray booths where ventilation cannot maintain safe levels, operators should wear compressed air-fed respirators during spraying and until vapour and particulate levels are below limits.

Hand protection

  • Use chemical-resistant gloves tested according to EN 374.
  • High protection (repeated/prolonged exposure, breakthrough time > 240–480 min):
    • Polyethylene (PE) gloves, min. thickness 0.062 mm.
    • PVA gloves, min. thickness 0.2–0.3 mm.
    • Butyl/Viton gloves, min. thickness 0.70 mm.
  • Medium protection (breakthrough time 60–240 min):
    • Polyethylene (PE) gloves, min. thickness 0.062 mm.
    • PVA gloves, min. thickness 0.2–0.3 mm.
    • Butyl/Viton gloves, min. thickness 0.70 mm.
    • Neoprene gloves, thickness <0.4 mm.
  • Short-term / splash protection (breakthrough time 10–60 min):
    • Polyethylene (PE) gloves, min. thickness 0.062 mm.
    • PVA gloves, min. thickness 0.2–0.3 mm.
    • Butyl/Viton gloves, min. thickness 0.70 mm.
    • Neoprene gloves, thickness <0.4 mm.
    • Nitrile gloves, min. thickness 0.175 mm.
  • Gloves not suitable (breakthrough time <10 min, non-exhaustive):
    • Natural rubber gloves, thickness about 0.75 mm.
    • Some neoprene gloves of about 0.13 mm thickness.
    • Butyl gloves of about 0.50 mm thickness.
  • Replace gloves regularly and immediately if damaged. Use PE under-gloves for difficult situations such as high exposure or unknown composition of chemicals.

Eye and face protection

  • Use safety eyewear to EN 166 designed to protect against liquid splashes (e.g. safety goggles or face shield).

Skin and body protection

  • Wear anti-static clothing made of natural fibre or high temperature resistant synthetic fibre.

Environmental protection

  • Do not allow the product to enter drains or watercourses.
