description

What is ALEXSEAL FINE FILLER 303 and why choose it?

ALEXSEAL Fine Filler 303 is a solvent-free, epoxy-based fairing filler designed for professional use on marine and industrial surfaces. It cures without shrinking into a water-resistant, solid coating and is formulated to be applied between ALEXSEAL fairing compounds and ALEXSEAL primers (Super Build 302 and Finish Primer 442). Thanks to its fast drying and excellent sanding characteristics, it delivers smooth, high-build surfaces with superior mechanical resistance.

Main features

  • Epoxy, solvent-free formula – cures without shrinking and forms a dense, water-resistant coating.
  • High mechanical resistance – the cured film offers superior mechanical strength.
  • Excellent sanding properties – easy to block sand with P100–P150 grit for a smooth, even finish.
  • Above and below waterline use – suitable for correctly prepared substrates both above and below the waterline (must be sealed before topcoating when used below waterline).
  • High film build and 100% volume solids – designed as a surfacer/filler to even out imperfections efficiently.
  • Controlled mixing – base and converter are different colours, making homogeneous mixing easy to verify.
  • Low VOC – volatile organic compound content is < 0.01% (< 0.2 g/L).
  • Professional-only product – intended for industrial and yacht coating applications by trained applicators.

  • Thinning: must not be reduced; do not add solvent.

Applications and use cases

Intended uses

  • Industrial serial painting: suitable for professional industrial coating lines.
  • Marine fairing and surfacing: used as an intermediate filler between ALEXSEAL Fairing Compound 202 and ALEXSEAL Super Build 302 and/or ALEXSEAL Finish Primer 442.
  • Above and below waterline surfaces: for evening out imperfections on properly prepared substrates above and below the waterline (below waterline applications must be sealed with 302 and/or 442 before topcoating).

Compatible substrates

  • ALEXSEAL primers and fillers.
  • Gel coat and raw resin lay-up.
  • Fiberglass laminates (properly ground or sandblasted).

Surface preparation

  • Substrates must be clean, dry and free from dust, grease, oil and other contamination.
  • Sand ALEXSEAL primers/fillers, gel coat or raw resin with P80–P150 grit.
  • Fiberglass resin: grind with P36–P60 grit and/or sandblast. The surface and the bottom of any fiberglass profile should be dull and uniformly abraded without shiny spots.
  • Before final topcoating, seal ALEXSEAL Fine Filler 303 with ALEXSEAL Super Build 302 and ALEXSEAL Finish Primer 442.

Application method

  • Application tools: trowels, spatulas, straight-edge materials.
  • Mix base and converter until the colour is completely homogeneous. Different component colours help visually control mixing quality.
  • Use slow-turning dough mixers or mix manually; do not use drill mixers. Avoid entrapping air bubbles.
  • Apply in thin layers by spatula or trowel, working up to the desired thickness before pulling off the excess with a straight edge. This helps prevent air pockets in the applied product.
  • Clean application equipment with R4042 ALEXSEAL Epoxy Primer Reducer.

Sanding and recoating

  • Block sand ALEXSEAL Fine Filler 303 with P100–P150 grit.
  • Finishing with P150 grit or finer helps avoid sand-scratch print-through in the final coating system.
  • Recoating Fine Filler 303 over itself should follow minimum “dry to sand” times. Scratch sand with P80–P120 grit to ensure intercoat adhesion.
  • Overcoat with ALEXSEAL Super Build 302 and/or ALEXSEAL Finish Primer 442 after minimum drying times and block sanding with P100–P150 grit.
