INTERDECK by International Náutica is a solvent-borne, slip resistant deck paint designed to provide a durable, low-sheen finish on yacht and boat decks. Thanks to its fine aggregate and tough polyurethane resin, it offers excellent anti-slip properties while protecting decks from everyday wear and tear. It is formulated for exterior use and can be applied over a wide range of properly prepared substrates.

Applications and use cases

Recommended substrates

• Previously painted surfaces in good condition (after washing and abrasion).
• Bare wood (suitably sanded and primed where specified).
• Steel (degreased and grit-blasted or mechanically abraded, then primed with an appropriate International primer).
• Aluminium (degreased, sanded and promptly primed with suitable International primers).
• GRP / fibreglass (degreased, sanded and, where specified, primed with an International primer).
• Aged or weathered gelcoats (after sealing with Interprotect and appropriate undercoat/primer).
• Filled and faired surfaces using compatible fillers from the International range.

INTERDECK is not suitable for permanently immersed surfaces and should not be cleaned with highly alkaline cleaners.

Application guidance (summary)

• Surface preparation:
  • Previously painted in good condition: Wash with Super Cleaner, rinse with fresh water, allow to dry, then abrade with 280–320 grit paper.
  • Previously painted in poor condition: Remove all coatings and prime the substrate.
  • Bare wood: Sand smooth with 80–180 grit, then 280 grit; remove dust carefully. Follow specified priming systems where required.
  • Steel: Degrease, then grit-blast to Sa 2½ (near-white metal) or mechanically abrade with 24–36 grit discs to a clean bright profile (50–75 microns). Prime with an appropriate International primer.
  • Aluminium: Degrease and sand with 24–120 grade aluminium-compatible paper; clean and dry, then prime with suitable International primers within 8 hours.
  • GRP: Degrease, sand with 60–120 grade paper, clean and dry, then prime as specified for the chosen system.
  • Aged/weathered gelcoats: Seal with three coats of Interprotect, then overcoat with the correct undercoat/primer before applying INTERDECK.
• Primed surfaces: Sand primer with 180–220 grit wet or dry paper, remove dust, then apply 1–2 coats of INTERDECK.
• Mixing: Stir thoroughly before use to ensure aggregate is evenly dispersed.
• Application: Apply by brush or mohair roller. For best non-slip profile, the film can be stippled with a brush or applied with a mohair roller.
• Conditions: Apply in a dry, well-ventilated environment, within the specified temperature ranges for product, ambient and substrate.

1. 1. Can INTERDECK be used below the waterline?
   No. INTERDECK is not suitable for permanently immersed surfaces.

2. 2. How many coats are recommended?
   Typically 1–2 coats are recommended, depending on colour change and desired texture.

3. 3. How is INTERDECK applied?
   It is applied by brush or roller only. It is not suitable for spray application.

4. 4. How long before the deck can be walked on?
   At 23°C, INTERDECK is normally hard enough to walk on after about 2 days. At lower temperatures, drying times are longer; at 5°C it is about 4 days, and at 35°C about 24 hours.

5. 5. Do I need to prime bare wood or metal first?
   Yes. Bare wood, steel and aluminium should be primed with suitable International primers as specified in the coating system before applying INTERDECK.

6. 6. What thinner and cleaner should be used?
   Use YTA800 Thinner No.1 for thinning where allowed and for cleaning equipment.

7. 7. Can INTERDECK be used indoors?
   The product is formulated for exterior use. If used in enclosed or interior areas, it must be applied only with very good ventilation and appropriate personal protection.

8. 8. How should the surface be cleaned before repainting an existing INTERDECK area?
   Wash with Super Cleaner, rinse thoroughly with fresh water, allow to dry, then abrade with 280–320 grit paper before recoating within the recommended overcoating intervals.

9. 9. Is the product available in all colours and pack sizes everywhere?
   No. Not all colours or pack sizes are available in all countries.

10. 10. What should I do with leftover paint and empty tins?
    Do not pour paint into watercourses or drains. Allow residues to harden where possible and dispose of paint and tins through authorised waste facilities, in line with local regulations.

Exposure controls and general hygiene

• Use only with adequate ventilation; employ local exhaust or process enclosure to keep vapour below occupational exposure limits and below the lower explosion limit.
• Avoid breathing vapour or mist and avoid skin and eye contact.
• Do not eat, drink or smoke in areas where the product is handled or applied. Wash hands, forearms and face thoroughly after use and before breaks.
• Remove contaminated clothing and protective equipment before entering eating areas; wash contaminated garments before reuse.
• Ensure eyewash stations and safety showers are close to the work area.

Individual protective equipment

• Eye/face protection: Safety glasses with side shields or equivalent eye protection conforming to an approved standard when there is a risk of splashes, mists or aerosols.
• Hand protection:
  • Chemical-resistant, impervious gloves complying with EN374 or equivalent.
  • For prolonged or frequently repeated contact: protection class 6 (breakthrough time > 480 minutes); recommended materials include Viton or nitrile (approx. thickness ≥ 0.38 mm).
  • For brief contact: protection class 2 or higher (breakthrough time > 30 minutes); recommended material nitrile (approx. thickness ≥ 0.12 mm).
