description

What is Epifanes PP Varnish Extra and why choose it

Epifanes PP Varnish Extra is a two-component, chemical-drying, high-build yacht varnish with UV filter, based on alkyd resin and isocyanate. Designed as a fast-drying, extreme high gloss base varnish, it delivers excellent flow, rapid film build and strong resistance to water, alcohol, soft drinks, household chemicals and hydrocarbon solvents. It is suitable for all types of marine wood, including oily species such as teak and iroko, and offers sufficient elasticity for working wood like masts and other moving wooden parts above the waterline.

Its combination of quick drying, superior filling power, abrasion resistance and professional-grade clarity makes Epifanes PP Varnish Extra an ideal base or sealer coat in high-performance interior and exterior clear varnish systems on yachts and wooden joinery.

Main features

  • Two-component high-build system: base component A and curing component B mixed 1:1 by volume and weight for a durable, chemically curing varnish film.
  • Extreme high gloss finish: delivers a deep, clear gloss that enhances the natural grain of marine and interior timbers.
  • Excellent resistance: resistant to water, household chemicals, alcohol, soft drinks and both aliphatic and aromatic hydrocarbon solvents.
  • Fast drying and rapid build-up: quick recoating and good filling properties allow multiple coats in short timeframes, with recommended 60–70 µm wet / 30–35 µm dry film per coat.
  • Elastic and abrasion resistant: suitable for working wood such as masts and other moving wooden parts, with very good scratch and wear resistance.
  • UV filter technology: contains a high-quality UV filter; for exterior durability it should be finished with 2–3 coats of Epifanes Polyurethane Clear or Epifanes Clear Gloss Varnish for additional UV protection.
  • Versatile application methods: can be applied by soft, long-haired brush or conventional air spray. Airless spray is not advised.
  • Professional base and sealer: recommended as a sealer and grain-filling varnish on bare solid wood and plywood, and as an isolating varnish on oily tropical species such as teak and iroko.
  • Interior and exterior use: suitable above the waterline for hull woodwork, masts, spars and for interior joinery such as doors, panels and kitchen furniture.

Applications and use cases

Marine and yachting applications

  • Base varnish on new wooden work above the waterline: hull planking, superstructures, rails and trim on both solid wood and marine plywood.
  • Masts and spars: the varnish’s elasticity and abrasion resistance make it particularly suited for masts and other moving wooden parts.
  • Oily tropical timbers: recommended as sealer and isolating varnish on teak, iroko and other oily woods before building up further varnish coats.
  • Maintenance of existing clear two-component systems: can be used for maintenance over intact, well-adhering clear two-component varnishes.

Interior woodwork and joinery

  • Interior finishing: suitable for doors, panels, kitchen furniture and other interior wooden surfaces where a high-gloss, chemically resistant finish is required.
  • Grain filling: used as a grain-filling varnish on open-pore woods; additional coats may be needed on teak or similar coarse-grain species to fill the grain completely.

System build examples (guideline)

Teak wood (brush application)

  • Substrate preparation: bare wood, dry, degreased and sanded; moisture content in the wood below approx. 15 %.
  • Step 1: Epifanes PP Varnish Extra, 3 coats, thinned 10–15 % with Epifanes Thinner for PP Varnish Extra; drying time per coat at approx. 18 °C: 2–3 hours; sand third coat with P220 after 24 hours. Note: on other wood species, first coat should be thinned 30–40 %.
  • Step 2: further build-up with additional Epifanes PP Varnish Extra coats or finishing coats as recommended below.

Typical finishing coats for exterior UV protection

  • One-component finishing: sand with P220, then apply at least 3 coats Epifanes Clear Gloss Varnish.
  • Two-component finishing: sand with P220, then apply at least 3 coats Epifanes Poly-urethane Clear Gloss or 3 coats Epifanes PU Speedcoat Clear (Gloss/Satin).

FAQ

  1. Is Epifanes PP Varnish Extra suitable for teak and other oily woods?

Yes. It is specifically recommended as a sealer and isolating varnish for oily woods such as teak and iroko, both as a base coat and as a grain-filling varnish.

  2. Can I use this varnish below the waterline?

No. The field of application is for wooden surfaces above the waterline only.

  3. Which thinners should I use for brushing and spraying?

For brushing, use Epifanes Thinner for PP Varnish Extra (fast) or Epifanes Poly-urethane Brush Thinner (slow). For conventional air spray, use Epifanes Thinner for PP Varnish Extra.

  4. How many coats are recommended on teak?

On teak, a typical system uses at least three coats of Epifanes PP Varnish Extra as base build-up. Depending on the open grain of the wood, more coats may be needed to completely fill the grain, followed by at least three finishing coats for UV protection.

  5. Do I need to sand between coats?

Within the wet-on-wet recoat window (approx. 2–3 hours at 20 °C), sanding is not required. When recoating after longer intervals (e.g. after 24 hours), sand with appropriate abrasive paper such as P220–P320 to ensure adhesion.

  6. Can I apply Epifanes PP Varnish Extra with airless spray?

Airless spray is not advised. Conventional air spray or brush application with long-haired soft brushes is recommended.

  7. Why is an additional UV protective topcoat recommended for exterior use?

Although Epifanes PP Varnish Extra contains a UV filter, its UV protection is limited. For long-term gloss retention and protection against yellowing and degradation outdoors, the system should be finished with at least three coats of Epifanes Polyurethane Clear Gloss/Satin, Epifanes PU Speedcoat or Epifanes Clear Gloss Varnish, which contain high-end UV filters.

  8. What are the ideal application conditions?

Apply between approx. 10–30 °C with relative humidity between about 50–75 %. Avoid direct sunlight, strong wind, poor ventilation and large temperature differences between product, substrate and working area.
