What is Epifanes Epoxy Primer White and why choose it?

Epifanes Epoxy Primer White is a modern two-component zinc phosphate epoxy primer designed for use both below and above the waterline. It delivers excellent filling and flow properties, strong rust protection on steel, deep impregnation and protection on wood, and a tough, osmosis-resistant barrier on FRP with outstanding adhesion. Fast drying and easy to sand, it can be recoated with both two-pack and single-pack systems, making it a versatile base for many yacht and marine coating schedules.

Main features

  • Two-component epoxy system: base (Comp. A) and curing component (Comp. B) for a durable, chemically curing film.
  • Above and below waterline use: suitable for complete hull sealing and topside priming.
  • Excellent anti-corrosion performance: zinc phosphate epoxy primer providing great rust protection on steel.
  • High protection on wood: penetrates well into timber, creating a highly protective barrier.
  • Osmosis protection for FRP: creates a tough, strong layer with very good osmosis resistance and perfect adhesion to FRP.
  • Excellent filling and flow: very good filling capacity while still maintaining smooth flow for an even surface.
  • Fast drying and easy sanding: short overcoating times and easy to sand for surface refinement.
  • Recoatable with one- and two-pack products: can be overcoated with Epifanes polyurethane primers and topcoats, Epifanes Epoxy HB Coat and Interimcoat, and compatible Epifanes epoxy fillers.
  • High solids content: approx. 75 ± 2 vol.% solids for efficient film build and coverage.

Substrate preparation and application

General application advice

  • Ensure good ventilation/exhaustion at the workplace.
  • Evenly distribute the paint over the surface and do not retip.
  • Do not apply excessive wet film thickness to avoid curtains and drying problems.
  • Avoid painting in direct sunlight or high wind to prevent rapid solvent evaporation and loss of flow.
  • If the product pulls and is difficult to apply, up to 10 % Epifanes D-601 Epoxy Thinner may be added.

Steel

  • Completely remove rust, grease, dirt and other contaminants.
  • Remove salt and water-soluble contaminants by thorough rinsing with clean water and, if needed, a high-pressure cleaner or emulsifier.
  • Remove grease and oil with water and ammonia or another suitable cleaning agent.
  • Coarse sand with 60–80G abrasive.

FRP (fiberglass reinforced plastic)

  • Degrease with Epifanes Fiberglass Cleaner.
  • Sand with 220G abrasive.

Aluminium (new)

  • On new aluminium it is recommended to apply 1 coat of Epifanes Washprimer AQ before Epoxy Primer.

Existing painted surfaces

  • Clean the surface thoroughly and degrease with Epifanes Spray Thinner for Paint & Varnish.
  • Sand with 180–220G.
  • Always clean and degrease again with Epifanes Spray Thinner before recoating.

Recoatable systems

  • Above the waterline:
    • Epifanes Poly-urethane Primer.
    • Epifanes Poly-urethane Yacht Coating.
    • Epifanes Epoxy HB Coat.
  • Below the waterline:
    • Epifanes Epoxy HB Coat.
    • Epifanes Interimcoat.
  • Fillers over Epifanes Epoxy Primer:
    • Epifanes Epoxy Filler 1500.
    • Epifanes Epoxy Finishing Filler.

Applications and use cases

  • Hull protection below the waterline: build sufficient film thickness to completely seal the hull against water ingress on steel, wood or FRP.
  • Topside and superstructure primer: semi-gloss primer with good scratch resistance above the waterline, ideal under polyurethane primers and topcoats.
  • Osmosis prevention and repair on FRP: use as part of an epoxy barrier system thanks to its strong, dense film and excellent adhesion to fiberglass.
  • Corrosion-resistant basecoat on steel structures: suitable for steel hulls and metal articles where long-term rust protection and high film build are required.
  • Primer under epoxy fillers and high-build coats: compatible with Epifanes epoxy fillers and Epoxy HB Coat for fairing and high-build systems.

FAQ – Epifanes Epoxy Primer White

  1. On which substrates can Epifanes Epoxy Primer White be used?

According to the technical data, it can be used on steel, wood, FRP, aluminium (with a preceding coat of Epifanes Washprimer AQ on new aluminium) and existing painted surfaces that are properly cleaned and sanded.

  2. Is it suitable for below the waterline?

Yes. It is specifically designed as a two-component primer for both below and above the waterline and, with sufficient film build, can completely seal the boat against water ingress.

  3. Do I need to sand between coats?

If the next coat is applied within 5 days, sanding is not required. After 5 days, sand with 120G before applying a fresh coat of Epifanes Epoxy Primer. As a general rule, each coat can be sanded with 180–220G dry sandpaper, always by hand.

  4. Which thinner should I use?

For both brush and spray application, the recommended thinner is Epifanes D-601 Epoxy Thinner. Up to 10 % may be added if the product pulls and is difficult to apply. Avoid over-thinning.

  5. At what temperatures can I apply this primer?

Apply between 54 °F and 82 °F, with relative humidity between 50 % and 75 %. The temperature difference between the paint and the surface should not exceed 38 °F. Do not apply below 54 °F.

  6. How long before I can overcoat Epifanes Epoxy Primer?

At 68 °F and 65 % relative humidity, the primer is typically recoatable after about 6 hours. Minimum recoating times vary from 18 hours at 54 °F to 4 hours at 77 °F.

  7. Which products can I apply over this primer?

Above the waterline it can be overcoated with Epifanes Poly-urethane Primer, Epifanes Poly-urethane Yacht Coating and Epifanes Epoxy HB Coat. Below the waterline it can be recoated with Epifanes Epoxy HB Coat and Epifanes Interimcoat. Epifanes Epoxy Filler 1500 and Epifanes Epoxy Finishing Filler can be used as fillers on top of this primer.

  8. Is Epifanes Epoxy Primer White fast drying?

Yes. At 68 °F it becomes dust-dry in about 1 hour and recoatable in about 6 hours, which allows multiple coats in a relatively short time under suitable conditions.
