What it is and why choose it

AWLQUILK Epoxy Primer Surfacer Converter (Awlgrip D9001) is the converter component of the Awlquik Epoxy Primer/Surfacer system (D8003/D9001). This two-component epoxy polyamide primer/surfacer is designed for quick drying, medium film build and easy sanding. It can be applied by spray, brush or roller and is suitable for professional use on properly prepared wood and fiberglass substrates, as well as as a surfacer over other Awlgrip primers. It is not to be used below the waterline.

Main features

  • Two-component epoxy polyamide converter for Awlquik Epoxy Primer/Surfacer (D8003/D9001).
  • Quick drying with good recoatability at 77°F and 50% relative humidity.
  • Medium build primer/surfacer that sands easily for a smooth finish.
  • Can be applied by conventional or airless spray, brush or roller.
  • Designed for use on properly prepared wood and fiberglass; also ideal as a surfacer over other Awlgrip primers.
  • Helps achieve an optimized surface prior to applying Awlgrip or Awlcraft 2000 topcoats.
  • For professional application; not recommended for use below the waterline.

Applications and use cases

  • Surfacer over Awlgrip primers: Recommended as a sanding surfacer over other Awlgrip primers for fairing and smoothing before finishing.
  • Wood substrates: May be applied by brush or roller directly to properly prepared wood; best results when the surface is first sealed with 545 Primer.
  • Fiberglass substrates: May be applied by brush or roller directly to properly prepared fiberglass; best results when sealed first with 545 Primer.
  • Topcoat systems: Can be overcoated with Awlgrip and Awlcraft 2000 topcoats, and with 545 Epoxy Primer. Sealing Awlquik with 545 Primer before applying Awlgrip/Awlcraft 2000 topcoat will maximize gloss and distinctness of image (D.O.I.) of the topcoat.
  • Do not use: Not to be used below the waterline.

FAQ

  1. What is AWLQUILK Epoxy Primer Surfacer Converter used for?

It is the converter component (D9001) of the Awlquik Epoxy Primer/Surfacer system, used to create a quick drying, easily sanded epoxy primer/surfacer for wood, fiberglass and as a surfacer over other Awlgrip primers.

  2. Can this converter be used on its own?

No. It is designed to be mixed by volume with Awlquik Off White Base D8003 in a 1:1 ratio before reduction and application.

  3. Which reducers should I use with D9001 in the Awlquik system?

For spray application use Spray Reducer T0006 (up to 50%). For brush or roller application use Brushing Reducer T0031 (up to 50%, or 50–70% on wood substrates).

  4. How many coats are recommended?

For spray, apply smooth coats of 4–6 mils wet to obtain 2–3 mils dry film thickness, allowing 4 hours between coats at 77°F / 50% R.H. For brush/roller, two coats are required.

  5. Do I need to sand between coats?

Light sanding between brush/roller coats will improve appearance. Maximum recoat time without sanding is 24 hours.

  6. Can I apply this system below the waterline?

No. The Awlquik Epoxy Primer/Surfacer system is not to be used below the waterline.

  7. Which topcoats are compatible?

Section 8 – Personal protection measures

Exposure control and general hygiene

  • Use only with adequate ventilation. Engineering controls such as local exhaust ventilation should keep airborne concentrations below regulatory limits.
  • Wash hands, forearms and face thoroughly after handling chemicals, before eating, smoking or using the restroom and at the end of the work period.
  • Remove contaminated clothing and protective equipment before entering eating areas and wash contaminated garments before reuse.
  • Ensure eye wash stations and safety showers are close to workstations.

Hand protection

  • Wear chemical resistant gloves complying with EN 374.
  • Recommended glove materials: Viton or nitrile.
  • For prolonged or frequently repeated contact, gloves with protection class 6 (breakthrough time greater than 480 minutes according to EN 374) are recommended.
  • For brief contact, gloves with protection class 2 or higher (breakthrough time greater than 30 minutes according to EN 374) are recommended.
  • The final glove selection should consider all workplace factors, including other chemicals handled, mechanical resistance, dexterity needs and the glove supplier’s instructions.

Eye and face protection

  • When a risk assessment indicates potential exposure, use approved eye protection to avoid splashes, mists, gases or dusts.
  • If contact is possible, use chemical splash goggles providing protection against liquid splashes.

Skin and body protection

  • Select protective clothing for the body based on the specific task and associated risks.
  • Where there is a risk of ignition from electrostatic charges, use antistatic protective clothing including coveralls, boots and gloves with antistatic properties.
  • Additional protective footwear and cutaneous protection should be selected according to task and approved by a safety specialist.

Respiratory protection

  • Use an appropriately fitted air-purifying or air-supplied respirator complying with approved standards when ventilation is insufficient or when a risk assessment indicates it is necessary.
  • The choice of respirator must be based on actual or anticipated exposure levels, product hazards and the reliability of the selected respirator.

Environmental exposure controls

  • Check emissions from ventilation and process equipment to ensure they comply with environmental protection legislation.
  • Where necessary, use fume scrubbers, filters or modifications to process equipment to reduce emissions.
