description

What TOPCOAT SPRAY STANDARD REDUCER is and why choose it

Awlgrip TOPCOAT SPRAY STANDARD REDUCER (T0003) is a solvent blend formulated as a standard reducer for spray-applied urethane topcoats. It is designed for use with Awlgrip, Awlcraft 2000 and Awlcraft SE topcoats, as well as specified Awlgrip primers. At typical application and cure temperatures between 70–90°F (21–32°C), T0003 keeps the paint film open long enough for good flow and leveling, yet evaporates quickly enough to deliver proper dry and dust-free times.

Main features

  • Standard spray reducer for urethane topcoats specifically matched to Awlgrip, Awlcraft 2000 and Awlcraft SE systems.
  • Optimized for 70–90°F (21–32°C) application and cure conditions to balance flow, leveling and drying.
  • Supports good film appearance by keeping the paint film open for proper flow while preventing excessive dry times.
  • Compatible with selected primers, including Quik-Grip Primer and Awlbrite Quik-Fil Clear.
  • High-solvent VOC reducer with a VOC value of 930 g/L (7.8 lbs/gal).
  • Flammable liquid and vapor with a low flash point, formulated for professional spray operations.

Technical characteristics

Chemical composition (hazardous ingredients)

  • 2-Propanol, 1-methoxy-, propanoate (CAS 148462-57-1): 50–75% by weight.
  • Ethyl acetate (CAS 141-78-6): 25–50% by weight.
  • Benzene, methyl- (toluene) (CAS 108-88-3): 10–25% by weight.

Physical and chemical properties

  • Physical state: Liquid.
  • Color: Colorless.
  • Specific gravity: 0.922962.
  • Boiling point: 171°F.
  • Flash point: 29°F (–2°C).
  • Vapor density: Heavier than air.
  • Evaporation rate: Slower than ether.
  • VOC content: 930 g/L or 7.8 lbs/gal (product data sheet).
  • VOHAP content (as supplied): 105.36 g/L of paint; 10535.71 g/L of solid coating.

Stability and reactivity

  • Chemical stability: Stable; hazardous polymerization will not occur.
  • Sensitivity: Not sensitive to mechanical impact.
  • Conditions to avoid: Excessive heat and improper handling that can generate fumes.
  • Incompatible materials: Strong oxidizing agents.
  • Hazardous decomposition products: Carbon dioxide and carbon monoxide when heated to decomposition (such as during welding).

Health and safety classification

  • HMIS rating: Health 2*; Flammability 3; Reactivity 0.
  • Acute inhalation effects: Harmful if inhaled; causes nose and throat irritation; vapors may affect the brain or nervous system causing dizziness, headache or nausea.
  • Eye contact: Risk of serious damage to eyes.
  • Skin contact: Causes skin irritation; repeated contact can cause dermatitis; may be harmful if absorbed through the skin.
  • Ingestion: Harmful if swallowed; may cause abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea or drowsiness.
  • Chronic effects: Birth defect hazard; contains an ingredient that can cause birth defects.

Applications and uses

Compatible coating systems

  • Awlgrip topcoats: Standard reducer for spray-applied Awlgrip urethane topcoats.
  • Awlcraft 2000 topcoats: Suitable for spray applications within the specified temperature range.
  • Awlcraft SE topcoats: Recommended reducer for standard spray conditions.
  • Primers: Recommended for use in Quik-Grip Primer and Awlbrite Quik-Fil Clear.

Recommended temperature range

  • Application and cure temperatures: 70–90°F (21–32°C).
  • Within this range, T0003 keeps the coating film open to allow proper flow and leveling while still supporting adequate drying and dust-free times.

Mixing and reduction guidance

All reducers for Awlgrip, Awlcraft 2000 and Awlcraft SE topcoats, including T0003, can be blended with each other in any ratio to fine-tune flow and evaporation rates. Most Awlgrip and Awlcraft 2000 topcoats recommend up to 25% reduction, calculated from the combined total of the base and converter components.

  • General reduction guideline for topcoats: Up to 25% reducer based on the total mixed base and converter volume.
  • Temperature adjustment: At higher temperatures, reducers evaporate faster; increasing the amount of reducer in the mix by 5–10% can help compensate.

Specific mixing ratios and application techniques depend on the coating system in use. Consultar ficha técnica del fabricante.

Storage and handling

  • Recommended storage temperature: 40–100°F (4–38°C).
  • Handling precautions: Keep away from heat, sparks and flame. Do not smoke during use. Turn off stoves, heaters, electric motors and other ignition sources during application and until vapors have dissipated.
  • Prevent vapor build-up by opening windows and doors to achieve cross-ventilation. Avoid contact with eyes, skin and clothing. Close container after each use and wash thoroughly after handling.

Frequently asked questions (FAQ)

1. What is the main purpose of TOPCOAT SPRAY STANDARD REDUCER T0003?

It is a standard reducer for spray-applied urethane topcoats, formulated to control flow, leveling and evaporation rate when using Awlgrip, Awlcraft 2000 and Awlcraft SE topcoats in typical ambient temperatures.

2. In what temperature range should T0003 be used?

T0003 is recommended when application and cure temperatures are between 70–90°F (21–32°C).

3. Can T0003 be blended with other Awlgrip reducers?

Yes. All listed reducers for Awlgrip, Awlcraft 2000 and Awlcraft SE topcoats can be blended with each other in any ratio to fine-tune flow and evaporation rates.

4. What VOC level does T0003 have?

T0003 has a VOC content of 930 g/L or 7.8 lbs/gal.

5. Is T0003 suitable for brushing applications?

No. T0003 is specified as a standard reducer for spray-applied urethane topcoats. For brushing or rolling, other reducers such as T0031 are recommended in the product data sheet.
