What is Epifanes Rust Remover and why choose it
Epifanes Rust Remover is a waterbased rust converter designed to remove rust from difficult areas on manually derusted steel surfaces. Based on water-repelling polymers, it reacts with corroded steel to create a blue/black surface that is suitable for subsequent painting and helps stop the corrosion process for some time. It can be applied on wet steel and under humid conditions, making it suitable for both above and below the waterline applications.
Main features
- Waterbased rust converter: Reacts chemically with rust on steel surfaces.
- Improves paint adhesion: Leaves the surface suitable for overcoating with anticorrosive primers.
- Temporarily stops corrosion: Helps interrupt the corrosion process for a period of time.
- Ideal for difficult areas: Specially intended for corners and punctiform rusting where manual derusting is challenging.
- Versatile application conditions: Can be applied on wet steel and in humid environments with limited ventilation.
- Compatible with Epifanes systems: Can be recoated with all Epifanes one-component and two-component primers and coatings.
- Low VOC: VOC level 0.00 g/litre.
- Clear visual reaction: Milky off-white on application; treated rust areas turn blue/black after reaction.

Applications and use cases
Field of application
- Removing rust in difficult places on manually derusted steel, such as corners.
- Treating punctiform (localized) rusting on steel surfaces.
- Suitable for steel areas both above and below the waterline.
Application instructions
- Remove all loose rust using a wire brush and/or coarse abrasive paper (P40–60).
- Ensure the entire bare steel surface is coarsely abraded.
- Hose the surface with fresh water to remove remaining contamination.
- Degrease thoroughly with Epifanes Cleaning Solution.
- Shake Epifanes Rust Remover well before use.
- Apply one thin coat using brush, roller or spray.
- Allow the product to react with the rust; the affected areas will turn blue/black.
- After a minimum of 3 hours and within 2 days, overcoat the blue/black surface with the first (thinned) anticorrosive primer.
Important remarks
- The rust remover must react with rust and is not intended for intact coatings.
- Do not apply on existing primers, paints or coatings. If spilled on paint or primer, remove immediately with a cloth.
- One treatment is sufficient; do not repeat.
- Epifanes Rust Remover is not a replacement for a primer coat.
FAQ
1. What type of surfaces can I treat with Epifanes Rust Remover?
It is designed for manually derusted steel surfaces, especially in difficult areas such as corners and localized rust spots, both above and below the waterline.
2. Can I use it as a primer?
No. Epifanes Rust Remover is not a replacement for a primer coat. After treatment, the surface must be coated with a suitable anticorrosive primer.
3. How many coats are required?
One thin coat is sufficient. The treatment should not be repeated.
4. Can I apply it over existing paint or primer?
No. The product must react directly with rust on bare steel. Do not apply on primers, paints or coatings. If it is spilled on coated surfaces, remove it immediately with a cloth.
5. What is the visual indication that the product has reacted?
The product is milky off white when applied. After reaction with rust, the treated steel areas turn blue/black.
6. Under what conditions can I apply Epifanes Rust Remover?
Apply between 5°C and 28°C, with relative air humidity between 50% and 90%. The steel surface must be at least 3°C above freezing.
7. Can it be applied on wet steel?
Yes. Epifanes Rust Remover can be applied on wet steel and under humid conditions with limited ventilation.
8. How long can I wait before overcoating?
Overcoat the blue/black surface after a minimum of 3 hours and within a maximum of 2 days with the first (thinned) anticorrosive primer.
9. What is the shelf life of the product?
In a closed container stored in a dark place between 5°C and 25°C and kept frost free, the shelf life is at least 3 years.
10. With which coatings is it compatible?
The treated surface can be recoated with all Epifanes one-component and two-component primers and coatings.
