description

What INTERPROTECT CONVERTER is and why choose it

INTERPROTECT CONVERTER (YPA404) is the curing component of the Interprotect high performance epoxy primer system from International Náutica. It is part of a two-component epoxy coating designed for exterior use on steel, aluminium and wood, providing quick drying, easy application and long-lasting protection. When mixed with the Interprotect base at the specified 3:1 ratio, it helps deliver excellent anticorrosive performance, strong adhesion and good abrasion resistance, making it suitable as both a primer and an antifouling tie-coat over epoxy primers.

Main features

  • Two-component epoxy system: Converter specifically formulated to react with the Interprotect base coat at a 3:1 volume mix ratio.
  • High performance protection: Contributes to excellent anticorrosive protection and good abrasion resistance when used as part of the Interprotect system.
  • Antifouling tie-coat: Enables Interprotect to function as a tie-coat over suitable epoxy primers before applying compatible antifoulings.
  • Fast drying: Short touch-dry and immersion times across a wide temperature range when mixed and applied as specified.
  • Wide substrate compatibility: Interprotect system can be used on correctly prepared steel, aluminium, zinc/galvanised steel, stainless steel, lead and bare wood, as well as over suitable epoxy primers.
  • Professional-grade exterior coating: Designed as a two-component coating for exterior use.

Applications and use cases

Typical substrates with the Interprotect system

  • Steel: Degrease, then gritblast to Sa 2½ (near white metal) with a 50–75 micron anchor profile. Where blasting is not possible, grind with 24–36 grit abrasive discs to a clean, bright surface.
  • Aluminium: Degrease and sand with 24–120 grade aluminium-compatible paper; use coarser grades for best adhesion. Prime with a recommended International primer within 8 hours.
  • Zinc/galvanised steel: Degrease, sand with 60–120 grade paper, clean, dry, then prime with a recommended International primer within 8 hours.
  • Stainless steel: Light gritblast to produce a 50 micron profile, clean thoroughly and prime with a recommended International primer within 8 hours.
  • Lead: Degrease and sand with 120 grade paper or power wire brush, then prime with a recommended International primer within 8 hours.
  • Bare wood: Sand smooth with 80–180 then 280 grade paper, remove dust, and if wiped with solvent allow to dry completely before applying products specified for direct-to-wood application.

Coating systems and number of coats (mixed Interprotect)

  • Steel / aluminium / alloy: 4–5 coats by brush/roller, depending on whether above or below waterline.
  • Lead: 5 coats.
  • Wood: 3 coats.
  • As tie-coat over Interprime 820: 1 coat.

FAQ

1. What is INTERPROTECT CONVERTER used for?

INTERPROTECT CONVERTER is the curing agent that is mixed with the Interprotect epoxy primer base at a 3:1 volume ratio to form a two-component, high performance epoxy coating for exterior protection of steel, aluminium, wood and other suitably prepared substrates.

2. How should I mix the converter with the base?

Stir or shake each component thoroughly, then add the converter to the base at 3:1 by volume. Stir well and leave the mixture for about 10 minutes to allow bubbles to disperse before application.

3. What thinners and cleaners are compatible?

For thinning, use YTA061 Thinner No.7 (GTA220). For equipment cleaning, use GTA822.

4. How many coats of Interprotect should I apply?

By brush or roller, typically 4–5 coats on steel, aluminium and alloy, 5 coats on lead, and 3 coats on wood. When used as a tie-coat over Interprime 820, apply 1 coat.

5. Can Interprotect with this converter be used over any existing coating?

No. It should not be applied over any conventional (one-pack) products. It is suitable over correctly prepared substrates and epoxy primers only.

6. What are the main hazards of the converter component?

The converter is a flammable liquid that can cause skin irritation, serious eye damage, allergic skin reactions and respiratory irritation, and is harmful to aquatic life with long lasting effects.

7. At what temperatures can I apply the mixed product?

Ambient temperature must be between 5°C and 35°C, product temperature between 10°C and 35°C, and substrate temperature between 5°C and 35°C.

8. How should I dispose of leftover product?

Do not pour paint into watercourses or drains. Allow residues to harden where possible and dispose of product and containers via authorised waste facilities, in line with local regulations.

9. What is the typical pot life of the mixed product?

Pot life is approximately 10 hours at 5°C, 5 hours at 15°C, 3 hours at 25°C and 2 hours at 35°C.

10. Is this product intended for consumer use?

The safety data identifies it as a two-component coating for exterior use, and it is indicated for professional use.

Section 8 – Personal protective measures

Exposure controls and engineering measures

  • Use only with adequate ventilation.
  • Employ process enclosures or local exhaust ventilation to keep airborne concentrations below occupational exposure limits and below the lower explosion limit.
  • Use explosion-proof ventilation and electrical equipment.

Individual protection

  • Hygiene measures: Wash hands, forearms and face thoroughly after handling and before eating, drinking or smoking. Contaminated work clothing should not leave the workplace and must be washed before reuse.
  • Eye and face protection: Wear chemical splash goggles and/or face shield complying with an approved standard when there is a risk of splashes or mists. If inhalation hazards exist, a full-face respirator may be required.
  • Hand protection:
    • Use chemical-resistant, impervious gloves compliant with EN374.
    • For prolonged or frequently repeated contact, gloves with protection class 6 (breakthrough time > 480 minutes) are recommended. Recommended materials: Viton or nitrile, thickness ≥ 0.38 mm.
    • For brief contact, gloves with protection class 2 or higher (breakthrough time > 30 minutes) are recommended. Recommended materials: nitrile, thickness ≥ 0.12 mm.
    • Replace gloves regularly and whenever damaged.
  • Body protection: Select protective clothing based on the task and associated risks. Where there is risk of ignition from static electricity, wear anti-static protective clothing including overalls, boots and gloves that comply with EN 1149.
  • Respiratory protection: If ventilation is insufficient, wear a respirator conforming to EN140 with type A/P2 filter or better. Dry sanding, flame cutting or welding of the dry paint film can produce hazardous dust and fumes; use wet sanding/flatting where possible and appropriate respiratory protection when exposure cannot be otherwise controlled.
  • Other skin protection: Wear suitable footwear and any additional protective garments as required by the specific job, following specialist advice.

Environmental exposure control

  • Check emissions from ventilation and process equipment to ensure compliance with environmental protection requirements.
  • Where necessary, use fume scrubbers, filters or engineering modifications to reduce emissions.
