description

What is Trilux 33 and why choose it?

Trilux 33 from International Náutica is a high performance, bright-coloured antifouling coating formulated with Biolux Technology. Its slow-polishing formula helps avoid excessive paint build-up while delivering effective fouling protection for up to 18 months. Suitable for all common marine substrates, including aluminium and bronze, it combines a bright, stable finish with a reduced VOC content to help lower solvent emissions.

It is designed for professional use on hulls, propellers and boottops where reliable antifouling performance and clean, sharp colours are required.

Main features

  • High performance, brightly coloured antifouling with improved, brighter white option.
  • Formulated with Biolux Technology for optimised biocide release and up to 18 months fouling protection (depending on conditions).
  • Slow polishing formula helps prevent paint build-up and polish-through at speed.
  • Suitable for all substrates, including aluminium, alloys, bronze, GRP, steel, iron, wood and lead (with appropriate primers).
  • Recommended for propellers and boottops as well as hulls.
  • Lower VOC content (390 g/L as supplied) to help reduce solvent emissions.
  • Matt finish available in a wide colour range: white, navy, black, red, green, blue and grey (availability varies by country).
  • Organotin-free antifouling system, compliant with the International Convention on the Control of Harmful Antifouling Systems on Ships, 2001.

Applications and use cases

Compatible substrates and priming

  • Aluminium / alloy: Prime with Interprotect or Primocon before applying Trilux 33. Suitable for aluminium hulls and suitably primed zinc-sprayed metals.
  • Bronze: Suitable when correctly prepared and primed.
  • GRP (bare): Gelshield 200 for osmosis protection, or Primocon, then Trilux 33.
  • Steel / iron: Prime with Interprotect or Primocon.
  • Lead: Prime with Interprotect or Primocon.
  • Wood: Prime with Interprotect or Primocon.
  • Previously antifouled surfaces: Can be applied directly over most existing antifoulings in sound condition. Non-antifouling coatings should be primed with Primocon, Intertuf 203 or Interprotect.

Typical use scenarios

  • Major refurbishment: As the antifouling topcoat over a complete, recommended primer system on new builds or full refits.
  • Maintenance and upgrading: Over approved existing antifouling schemes after high-pressure washing (about 3000 psi / 211 bar) and local priming of corroded areas with Primocon.
  • Areas of high wear: Chines, rudders, sterngear and leading edges, where an additional stripe coat of Trilux 33 is recommended for extra protection.
  • Seasonal lay-up: If the coated surface is exposed out of water for a period (e.g. over winter), it must be high-pressure fresh-water washed before re-immersion.

FAQ

1. On which substrates can I use Trilux 33?

Trilux 33 is suitable for all common marine substrates, including aluminium and its alloys, bronze, GRP, steel/iron, lead and wood, provided they are correctly prepared and primed with the recommended primers (Interprotect, Primocon, Intertuf 203 or Gelshield 200 as specified).

2. How many coats do I need?

For full performance, apply 2 coats by airless spray or 3 coats by roller. In high-wear areas such as chines, rudders and sterngear, apply an extra stripe coat.

3. What is the maximum time before launching after application?

The maximum time to immersion is 6 months at all temperatures. If this time is exceeded, high-pressure fresh-water wash or wet abrade the surface with 180–240 grade paper before immersion.

4. Can Trilux 33 be thinned?

Thinning is not recommended. Thinner No. 3 should only be used in exceptional circumstances (for example, extreme weather) and is also used for cleaning application equipment.

5. Is Trilux 33 suitable for aluminium hulls?

Yes. Trilux 33 is specifically formulated to be suitable for aluminium when applied over suitable primers such as Interprotect or Primocon on properly prepared surfaces.

6. Can I apply it over an existing antifouling?

Yes, it can be applied directly over most types of existing antifouling, provided the old coating is in sound condition. Non-antifouling coatings should be primed with a suitable non-antifouling primer (Primocon, Intertuf 203 or Interprotect).

7. How do I prepare a previously coated hull in poor condition?

Degrease and clean with controlled high-pressure fresh water washing (around 3000 psi / 211 bar), then repair corroded or damaged areas with the recommended anticorrosive primer system (typically Primocon) before applying Trilux 33.

8. What is the typical drying time before overcoating?

At 23°C, Trilux 33 can generally be overcoated after a minimum of 6 hours, with no maximum overcoating time (provided the surface remains clean and sound). At 5°C the minimum is 24 hours, at 15°C 16 hours, and at 35°C 4 hours.

Section 8 – Personal protective measures

Trilux 33 is a professional-use product containing biocides and organic solvents. Appropriate personal protection is essential during handling and application.

Engineering controls

  • Use only with adequate ventilation and, where necessary, local exhaust ventilation or process enclosure to keep airborne concentrations below recommended limits and below the lower explosion limit.
  • Use explosion-proof ventilation and electrical equipment in areas where vapours may be present.

General hygiene

  • Avoid eating, drinking and smoking in work areas. Wash hands, forearms and face thoroughly after handling and before breaks.
  • Contaminated work clothing should not leave the workplace and must be washed before reuse.
  • Ensure eyewash stations and safety showers are available near the work area.

Eye and face protection

  • Wear chemical splash goggles and/or a face shield that complies with relevant standards when there is any risk of splashes, mists or spray.
  • For spray application where inhalation risk exists, a full-face respirator may be required.

Hand protection

  • Use chemical-resistant, impervious gloves conforming to EN 374 or equivalent.
  • For prolonged or frequent contact, gloves with protection class 6 (breakthrough time > 480 minutes) are recommended, such as Viton or nitrile with thickness ≥ 0.38 mm.
  • For brief contact, at least protection class 2 (breakthrough time > 30 minutes) nitrile gloves with thickness ≥ 0.12 mm are recommended.
  • Replace gloves regularly and immediately if any damage or degradation is observed.

Body and skin protection

  • Wear suitable protective clothing selected according to the task, such as chemical-resistant coveralls.
  • Where there is risk of ignition from static electricity, use antistatic protective clothing including overalls, boots and gloves meeting EN 1149 or equivalent.
  • Use appropriate protective footwear and any additional skin protection measures required by the risk assessment.

Respiratory protection

  • Select a respirator based on hazard level and exposure potential, in line with a formal respiratory protection programme.
  • Wear a respirator conforming to EN140 with type A/P2 filter or better when ventilation is insufficient.
  • Dry sanding, flame cutting and welding of the dry paint film can generate hazardous dust and fumes. Wet sanding/flatting should be used wherever possible; if exposure cannot be adequately controlled, suitable respiratory protection must be worn.
