Applications and use cases

Recommended substrates above the waterline

  • Previously painted surfaces in good or poor condition (after suitable preparation).
  • Bare wood.
  • Steel.
  • Aluminium.
  • GRP (glass-reinforced plastic) / fibreglass.
  • Aged or weathered gelcoats (following sealing and priming system).

Typical marine applications

  • Topsides and hulls above the waterline.
  • Deckhouses, superstructures and cabin sides.
  • Bulwarks, transoms and coamings.
  • Interior and exterior areas where a high-gloss, durable finish is required.
  • Touch-up and repairs over existing compatible paint schemes.

Surface preparation overview

  • Previously painted surfaces in good condition: wash with suitable detergent, rinse with fresh water, allow to dry and abrade with 280–320 grit paper.
  • Previously painted surfaces in poor condition: remove all previous coatings and prime the substrate.
  • Bare wood: sand smooth with 80–180 grit paper; remove sanding dust by brushing, dusting and wiping. If wiped with solvent, allow to dry completely before priming.
  • Steel: degrease with solvent, Super Cleaner or suitable liquid detergent. Gritblast to Sa 2½ (near white metal). If blasting is not possible, grind with 24–36 grit abrasive discs to a clean, bright, uniformly roughened surface (50–75 microns anchor pattern). Clean thoroughly, dry and prime with One UP as soon as possible (within 8 hours).
  • Aluminium: degrease as above. Sand with 60–120 grade aluminium-compatible paper. Clean thoroughly, dry and prime with One UP within 8 hours.
  • GRP: degrease with solvent, Super Cleaner or suitable detergent. Sand with 180–220 grade paper, clean thoroughly and allow to dry.
  • Aged/weathered gelcoats: due to increased porosity, apply 3 coats of Interprotect to seal the gelcoat, then overcoat Interprotect with One UP before applying TOPLAC PLUS.
  • All substrates: ensure surfaces are suitably primed with an appropriate primer before application.

Application guidelines

  • Sand the undercoat smooth with 320–400 grit wet or dry paper and remove dust with a tack cloth.
  • Stir TOPLAC PLUS thoroughly before use.
  • Apply 2–3 full coats by brush or foam roller. When rolling, tipping is not required.
  • For brush/roller application, add around 10% Thinner No. 100 to ease application; at temperatures above 25°C, an additional 5% Thinner No. 100 may be added, adjusting to climatic conditions.
  • Apply in dry, well-ventilated conditions. Avoid application late in the evening, as condensation during overnight cure can cause loss of gloss.

FAQ

  1. Is TOPLAC PLUS suitable for use below the waterline?

No. TOPLAC PLUS is designed for all substrates above the waterline and is not suitable for permanently immersed surfaces.

  2. Can I apply TOPLAC PLUS directly over old paint?

Yes, provided the existing coating is in good condition, thoroughly cleaned, rinsed, dried and abraded with 280–320 grit paper. If the old coating is in poor condition, it should be removed and the substrate re-primed.

  3. What primer should I use under TOPLAC PLUS?

Use a suitable primer such as One UP, applied according to its technical datasheet and matched to the substrate. Consultar ficha técnica del fabricante.

  4. How many coats are recommended?

Generally 2–3 coats are recommended for full durability and gloss. Only one coat may be required for local touch-up or repair.

  5. Do I need to tip off when applying by roller?

No. TOPLAC PLUS is formulated so that application by foam roller does not require tipping, while still delivering a smooth, high-gloss finish.

  6. What are the drying and overcoating times?

At 25°C, the coating is typically touch dry in about 2 hours and can be overcoated after 8 hours, with a maximum overcoating time of 2 days. Drying and overcoating times vary with temperature; see the technical data for full details.

  7. Can TOPLAC PLUS be used inside the boat?

Yes, it is suitable for interior and exterior use. Ensure adequate ventilation and follow the recommended personal protection measures.

  8. In which conditions should I avoid using TOPLAC PLUS?

Do not apply below 5°C, above 35°C, in very humid or poorly ventilated conditions, or late in the evening when condensation can form during curing. Avoid using the product on surfaces that run hotter than 80°C, as discolouration may occur.

  9. How should I thin and clean the product?

For brush or roller application, thin with Thinner No. 100 as required, typically around 10%, with an extra 5% at temperatures above 25°C. Clean tools and equipment with Thinner No. 1 or Thinner No. 100.

  10. How long can I store TOPLAC PLUS?

The typical shelf life is 2 years when stored unopened in its original container between 5°C and 35°C and out of direct sunlight.
