description

What is Perfection Pro Varnish Base and why choose it

Perfection Pro Varnish Base from International Náutica is the high-performance polyurethane base component of a two-pack varnish system designed for premium brightwork on yachts and other marine timber. When combined with the dedicated curing agent YSC032, it provides a tough, high-gloss, chemically cured varnish with excellent resistance to abrasion, fuels, oils and mild acids and alkalis. Specially formulated brush/roller and spray bases (YSC246 and YSC252) allow you to optimise application quality and efficiency for any project.

Thanks to its long service life, compatibility with oily hardwoods such as teak and iroko, and professional-grade finish, Perfection Pro Varnish Base is ideal for demanding users who need a durable, deep-gloss clear coating above the waterline.

Applications and use cases

Recommended substrates and compatibility

  • Wood: Bare new timber, aged timber and oily hardwoods such as teak and iroko, after correct sanding and degreasing.
  • Primed timber: Over Clear Wood Sealer (recommended especially on deep grain timber for grain filling).
  • Previously varnished surfaces (two-pack only): Over sound dark Perfection Pro topcoat colours after washing and sanding with P320–P400.

Perfection Pro Varnish Base must not be used on flexible constructions, over one-pack products or on permanently immersed surfaces. It will crack on carvel and clinker/lapstrake hulls.

New and aged bare timber

  • Aged timber: Hard sand with 60–80 grit inline with the grain until all greyed, UV-damaged fibres are removed and an even original timber tone is exposed. Clean deep grain pits thoroughly (a stiff wire brush may help).
  • New timber: Sand smooth with 120 grit, then 240, then 320 grit. Remove sanding dust by vacuum, compressed air and solvent wiping; allow solvent to dry completely.
  • Priming option: Apply at least 4 coats of Clear Wood Sealer (more if required for grain fill), sand lightly with P320–P400, then apply a minimum of 3 coats of Perfection Pro Varnish.
  • Direct-to-wood option (no priming): Thin the first coat 10–20% with YTA100 and work into the grain (brush/roller). Apply at least 4 further full coats by brush, roller or spray.

Oily woods (e.g. teak, iroko)

  • Degrease thoroughly with Thinner No. 9 or YTA910 before varnishing.
  • Ensure the surface is completely dry and apply the first coat within one hour of degreasing.
  • Follow either the primed or direct-to-wood systems described above.

Previously painted or varnished two-pack surfaces

  • Only suitable over two-pack systems and dark Perfection Pro topcoat colours.
  • Do not apply over white, light or pastel colours.
  • Wash with Super Cleaner, rinse with fresh water and allow to dry.
  • Abrade with 320–400 grit paper; if the underlying base coat is exposed, re-apply base colour before varnishing.
  • Apply 2–3 coats of Perfection Pro Varnish.

Typical marine and decorative uses

  • Yacht and motorboat brightwork above the waterline.
  • Cabin sides, handrails, toe rails and exterior trim in hardwood.
  • Interior joinery where a durable, high-gloss clear finish is required.
  • Timber decks when used with a suitable non-slip additive mixed into the varnish.

FAQ

  1. Is Perfection Pro Varnish Base a one-pack or two-pack product?

It is a two-pack polyurethane system. The base must be mixed with Perfection Pro Finish Curing Agent YSC032 at a 2:1 volume ratio.

  2. Can I use this varnish base over existing varnish?

Yes, but only over sound two-pack systems and dark Perfection Pro topcoat colours. The surface must be cleaned and sanded with P320–P400; do not apply over white, light or pastel colours or over one-pack products.

  3. Is it suitable for teak and other oily woods?

Yes. It is fully compatible with oily woods like teak and iroko after thorough degreasing with suitable thinners and correct surface preparation.

  4. How many coats are recommended on bare wood?

With Clear Wood Sealer as primer, apply at least 4 coats of sealer plus a minimum of 3 coats of Perfection Pro Varnish. Without primer, thin the first coat 10–20% and apply at least 4 additional full coats.

  5. Do I need to sand between coats?

Sanding is not required between every coat, but sanding between the last two coats with 320–400 grit paper will produce a smoother, higher-quality finish.

  6. Can it be used below the waterline or on flexible hulls?

No. The product is not suitable for permanently immersed surfaces and should not be used on flexible constructions such as carvel or clinker/lapstrake hulls, where it may crack.

  7. Which thinner should I use?

For brush and roller applications use International Thinner YTA100 (up to 20%). For spray use YTA910 between 10–25°C, or a blend of YTA910/YTA100 with up to 33% YTA100 between 25–35°C.

  8. What are the ideal application conditions?

Best results are obtained at around 15°C in dry, well-ventilated conditions with relative humidity below 80%. Avoid direct sunlight, very hot substrates and late-evening application when condensation may form.

  9. How long does the coating last?

The system is formulated for longer service life than ordinary varnishes. Actual durability will depend on exposure conditions and maintenance. Consultar ficha técnica del fabricante.

  10. Can I add matting additives to reduce gloss?

No. Perfection Pro Varnish is not compatible with matting additives.

Section 8 – Individual protection measures

The following information is based on the safety data for Perfection Pro Finish Curing Agent YSC032 (component of the system) and applies when mixing and applying the two-pack varnish in professional or industrial settings.

  • General hygiene: Do not eat, drink or smoke while handling the product. Wash hands, forearms and face thoroughly after use and before breaks. Remove contaminated clothing and wash before reuse.
  • Eye/face protection: Use safety glasses with side shields or equivalent eye protection that complies with relevant standards when there is a risk of splashes or mist.
  • Hand protection: Wear chemical-resistant, impervious gloves. For prolonged or frequent contact, gloves with protection class 6 (breakthrough time > 480 minutes according to EN374) are recommended; Viton or nitrile gloves with thickness ≥ 0.38 mm. For brief contact, nitrile gloves with thickness ≥ 0.12 mm and protection class ≥ 2 are recommended. Replace gloves regularly and at any sign of damage.
  • Skin and body protection: Wear suitable protective clothing selected according to the task and the risks (for example, chemical-resistant overalls). Choose appropriate footwear and any additional skin protection measures as advised by a safety specialist.
  • Respiratory protection: Ensure adequate ventilation and local exhaust. For long-term exposure, use an air-supplied half-mask respirator. For short-term work, use a respirator conforming to EN140 with type A/P2 filter or better. During dry sanding, flame cutting or welding of the dry film, wet methods or effective extraction and appropriate respiratory protection must be used.
  • Engineering controls: Use process enclosures, local exhaust or other engineering controls to keep airborne concentrations below occupational exposure limits.
