description

What is Perfection Pro Undercoat Converter and why choose it?

Perfection Pro Undercoat Converter is the dedicated curing component (YSC249) of the Perfection Pro Undercoat system from International Náutica. Together with the white or black base and the activator, it forms a fast-drying, three-component polyurethane undercoat specifically designed for brush, roller and spray application on suitably primed marine substrates. Used beneath Perfection Pro Finish, it helps deliver a smooth, easily sanded, high-performance undercoat that maximizes gloss and durability of the topcoat system.

This converter is formulated for professional and industrial users who need reliable curing performance, controlled pot life and strong adhesion within a high-build, two-pack polyurethane undercoat system.

Main features

  • Part of a 3-component polyurethane system: used in combination with Perfection Pro Undercoat base (white or black) and Perfection Pro Undercoat activator.
  • Fast drying and easy sanding when mixed and applied as Perfection Pro Undercoat, helping to speed up multi-coat application schedules.
  • Optimised for multiple application methods: suitable for brush, roller or spray when used at the specified mix ratio.
  • Designed for use under Perfection Pro Finish, providing a compatible, high-performance undercoat layer.
  • Tintable system: the undercoat base can be tinted to a suitable shade using Perfection Pro, allowing better colour coverage with the final topcoat.
  • Professional-grade solventborne technology, with VOC content of 550 g/L (as supplied for the mixed Perfection Pro Undercoat system).

Applications and use cases

  • High-performance yacht and boat undercoat: used beneath Perfection Pro Finish on suitably primed marine substrates to provide a smooth, matt surface with excellent adhesion.
  • Refinishing previously painted surfaces: after cleaning and abrasion of existing coatings in good condition, Perfection Pro Undercoat (with this converter) can be applied as an intermediate undercoat.
  • Bare wood or steel (after priming): used over Interprotect or other appropriate International two-pack epoxy primers as specified, before application of Perfection Pro Finish.
  • GRP and aged/weathered gelcoats: when prepared and primed according to the technical data sheet, the system helps to level the surface and reduce pinholing before topcoating.
  • Professional spray application: compatible with spray setups where fast turnarounds and controlled film builds are required.

Application guidance (system overview)

  • Surface preparation:
    • Previously painted surfaces in good condition: wash with Super Cleaner, rinse with fresh water, allow to dry and abrade with 280–320 grit paper.
    • Previously painted surfaces in poor condition: remove all existing coatings and prime the substrate as recommended.
    • GRP and aged/weathered gelcoats: clean thoroughly, abrade with 180–220 grit and, where specified, apply 3 coats of an International 2-pack epoxy primer before Perfection Pro Undercoat.
  • Mixing:
    • Stir each component (base, converter, activator) individually.
    • Mix at 3:1:0.4 (Base:Converter:Activator) by volume and stir thoroughly.
    • Thin only if necessary, up to <10% with Thinner 910 (YTA910) or Thinner 920 (YTA920).
  • Application:
    • Apply 2–3 coats by brush/roller, or 3 coats by spray with 5–15 minutes flash-off between coats.
    • No sanding is required between undercoat coats; before Perfection Pro topcoat, sand the undercoat with P400 and clean with dust wipe and 600 Wipe Down Solvent (ITA075).
  • Environmental conditions:
    • Do not use below 15°C.
    • Avoid application when condensation may form on the substrate.
    • Product temperature: 15–35°C.
    • Ambient temperature: 5–35°C.
    • Substrate temperature: 3°C above dew point and max 35°C.
    • Avoid relative humidity above 80%.

FAQ – Perfection Pro Undercoat Converter

  1. Is Perfection Pro Undercoat Converter sold on its own?

Yes. It is supplied separately (typically in quart units) and is combined with Perfection Pro Undercoat base and activator at the specified 3:1:0.4 mix ratio.

  2. Can I change the mix ratio to adjust drying time?

No. The converter must always be used at 3:1:0.4 (Base:Converter:Activator). Altering the ratio can affect curing, adhesion, film integrity and durability.

  3. What topcoats is this converter compatible with?

When used as part of the Perfection Pro Undercoat system, it is specifically designed to be overcoated with Perfection Pro Finish.

  4. Can the undercoat colour be adjusted?

Yes. The Perfection Pro Undercoat white or black base can be tinted using Perfection Pro. Both products must first be mixed with their respective curing components before tinting.

  5. How many coats of Perfection Pro Undercoat do I need?

Typically 2–3 coats by brush or roller, or 3 coats by spray, following the recommended film thicknesses and overcoating intervals.

  6. Do I need to sand between undercoat coats?

No sanding is required between undercoat coats. Sanding with P400 is required before applying Perfection Pro topcoat or if the maximum overcoating interval is exceeded.

  7. What thinner should I use with the mixed system?

If thinning is necessary, use up to <10% Thinner 910 (YTA910) or Thinner 920 (YTA920), as specified.

  8. How should leftover mixed product be disposed of?

Allow paints to harden where possible and dispose of residues and containers via authorised waste facilities. Do not pour paint into watercourses or drains.

Section 14 – Transport information

Perfection Pro Undercoat Converter forms part of a professional, solventborne coating system. During transport and storage, containers should remain securely closed, upright and protected from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures. Always follow current local, regional and national regulations for transporting flammable coating materials.

Within user premises, ensure personnel know the correct actions to take in the event of an accident or spillage.

Section 8 – Individual protection measures

Exposure controls and personal protection (system components)

  • Engineering controls: Use only with adequate ventilation. Where necessary, use local exhaust or process enclosures to keep airborne solvent levels below applicable occupational exposure limits. Use explosion-proof ventilation equipment.
  • Eye/face protection: Wear safety glasses with side shields or chemical splash goggles when there is a risk of splashes or spray.
  • Hand protection:
    • Use chemical-resistant, impervious gloves complying with EN374 when handling components or mixed product.
    • For prolonged or frequent contact: gloves with protection class 6 (breakthrough time > 480 min); recommended materials include Viton or nitrile, thickness ≥ 0.38 mm.
    • For brief contact: gloves with protection class ≥ 2 (breakthrough time > 30 min); recommended nitrile gloves, thickness ≥ 0.12 mm.
  • Skin and body protection: Wear suitable protective clothing selected according to the task. Where static ignition is a risk, use anti-static overalls, boots and gloves in line with EN 1149.
  • Respiratory protection: If ventilation is insufficient or in confined spaces, wear a respirator conforming to EN140 with an A/P2 filter or better, selected under a formal respiratory protection programme.
  • Hygiene measures: Avoid eating, drinking or smoking in areas where the product is handled. Wash hands, forearms and face thoroughly after handling and before breaks. Wash contaminated clothing before reuse.
  • Environmental precautions: Emissions from ventilation or process equipment should be checked to ensure compliance with environmental regulations; additional filters or scrubbers may be required to reduce solvent emissions.
