International Náutica ONE UP is a single-pack primer and undercoat designed for use above the waterline with International one-pack finishes and deck paints. It provides a smooth, easy-to-sand base that improves the aesthetic appearance and long-term protection of substrates such as wood, steel, aluminium, GRP/epoxy and galvanised steel. Simple yet effective, it is ideal for DIY users who want professional-looking results with brush or roller application.

  • Single-pack primer / undercoat for use with International one-pack finishes and deck paints.
  • Above-waterline protection for interior and exterior areas.
  • Easy application by brush or roller with an extra-smooth finish.
  • Easy to sand, helping to achieve a flat, uniform surface before topcoating.
  • Good substrate versatility: suitable for bare wood, previously painted surfaces, steel, aluminium, GRP/epoxy and zinc/galvanised steel.
  • Adjustable application: can be thinned up to 10% with the recommended thinners when required.
  • Compatible system with International one-pack topcoats such as Bilgekote, Danboline, Interdeck, Super Gloss HS, Toplac and Toplac Plus.

Applications and use cases

Suitable substrates

  • Previously painted surfaces (in good condition): wash with suitable detergent, rinse with fresh water, allow to dry, then sand with 220–280 grit paper.
  • Previously painted surfaces (in poor condition): remove all existing coatings before priming.
  • Bare wood: sand smooth with 80–180 grit, then 280 grit; remove sanding dust thoroughly. If wiped with solvent, allow to dry completely before applying ONE UP.
  • Steel: degrease with solvent, Super Cleaner or suitable detergent. Grit-blast to Sa 2½ (near-white metal). If blasting is not possible, grind with 24–36 grit abrasive discs to a clean, bright, well-roughened surface (50–75 microns anchor pattern). Clean and dry thoroughly.
  • Aluminium: degrease, then sand with 24–120 grade (aluminium-compatible) paper. Coarser grades are recommended to optimise adhesion. Clean and dry thoroughly.
  • Zinc / galvanised steel: degrease, sand with 60–120 grade paper, clean and dry thoroughly.
  • GRP / epoxy: degrease, sand with 180–220 grade paper, clean and dry thoroughly.

Recommended coating system by substrate

  • Steel and aluminium: apply 3 coats of ONE UP (unthinned).
  • GRP / epoxy: apply 2 coats (unthinned).
  • Wood: apply 4 coats (unthinned).
  • Extra protection: an additional coat on any substrate increases overall protection; may also be needed if a low-build foam roller is used or if aggressive sanding has removed film thickness.

Overcoating with International finishes

Once dry and within the stated overcoating windows (without sanding), ONE UP can be overcoated with compatible International one-pack products such as Bilgekote, Danboline, Interdeck, Super Gloss HS, Toplac, Toplac Plus and Watertite (check specific minimum intervals for each product and temperature in the technical data).

For enhanced colour depth, the final coat of ONE UP may be blended 50:50 with an approved International topcoat.

Typical marine and leisure applications

  • Priming and undercoating topsides, superstructures and cabin sides above the waterline.
  • As a base for deck paints and non-slip systems on GRP, wood or metal decks (when used with compatible International deck coatings).
  • Refurbishment of previously painted areas where a smooth, easily sanded undercoat is required before applying gloss finishes.
  • Interior and exterior areas on yachts and motorboats where one-pack finishes are specified.

FAQ – International Náutica ONE UP

  1. Is ONE UP suitable below the waterline?

No. ONE UP is specified for use above the waterline only and is not suitable for permanently immersed surfaces.

  2. Can I overcoat ONE UP with two-component (2-pack) paints?

No. The product should not be overcoated with 2-component solvent-based coatings.

  3. Do I need to sand between coats?

The published drying and overcoating intervals are given without sanding between coats. However, light sanding may be used to improve smoothness, bearing in mind that excessive sanding reduces film thickness and may require an extra coat.

  4. What thinner should I use?

Use Thinner No.1 (YTA800) or Thinner No.100 (YTA100) for thinning (up to 10% if required) and cleaning application tools.

  5. At what temperatures can I apply ONE UP?

Product, ambient and substrate temperatures should be between 5°C and 35°C.

  6. How should I apply the product?

Apply by solvent-resistant standard brush or a 4 mm nap velour roller / solvent-resistant foam roller in dry, well-ventilated conditions.

  7. Is ONE UP flammable?

Yes. According to the safety data sheet it is classified as a flammable liquid, Category 3 (H226 – flammable liquid and vapour). Keep away from heat, hot surfaces, sparks, open flames and other ignition sources. No smoking.

  8. Can the remaining paint be disposed of with household waste?

No. Remainders of ONE UP must not be disposed of via municipal waste or poured into watercourses. Disposal must be arranged in consultation with the relevant local authorities or an authorised waste contractor.

Section 8 – Individual protection measures

ONE UP is a solvent-borne, flammable coating. The following personal protective equipment and safety measures are indicated in the safety data sheet when handling, applying or sanding the product:

General hygiene and work practices

  • Avoid ingestion and contact with eyes, skin and clothing.
  • Avoid breathing vapour, mist or spray; use only with adequate ventilation.
  • Do not eat, drink or smoke in areas where the product is handled or applied.
  • Wash hands, forearms and face thoroughly after use and before eating, drinking or smoking.
  • Remove contaminated clothing and protective equipment before entering eating areas and wash contaminated clothing before reuse.

Eye and face protection

  • Use safety glasses with side shields, or equivalent eye protection, complying with an approved standard when there is a risk of splashes or spray.

Hand protection

  • Wear chemical-resistant, impervious gloves complying with EN374 or an equivalent standard.
  • For prolonged or frequently repeated contact, gloves with protection class 6 (breakthrough time > 480 minutes) are recommended – for example Viton or nitrile gloves with a thickness of ≥ 0.38 mm.
  • For brief contact, gloves with protection class 2 or higher (breakthrough time > 30 minutes) are recommended – for example nitrile gloves with a thickness of ≥ 0.12 mm.
  • Replace gloves regularly and immediately if damaged. The actual breakthrough time can vary between manufacturers and may be reduced by physical or chemical damage.

Skin and body protection

  • Wear suitable protective clothing selected according to the task and risk level.
  • Where there is a risk of ignition from static electricity, use anti-static protective clothing including overalls, gloves and suitable footwear (see EN 1149 for design and material guidance).

Respiratory protection

  • When ventilation is insufficient to keep exposure below applicable limits, wear a respirator complying with EN140 with an A/P2 filter or better.
  • During dry sanding, flame cutting or welding of dried paint films, hazardous dusts and fumes may be generated; wet sanding/flatting is preferred. If exposure cannot be avoided, use suitable respiratory protection.

Environmental exposure control

  • Emissions from ventilation or process equipment should be checked to ensure compliance with environmental legislation.
  • Avoid release to drains, watercourses and soil.
