Applications and use cases

Primary applications

  • Direct glazing in the marine industry
  • Bonding of all types of mineral glass in shipbuilding
  • New construction and repair glazing
  • Installation of mineral glass windows

Glazing and joint design

  • Suitable for mineral safety laminated glasses.
  • Before installing laminated safety glass with integrated heating equipment in the glass-PVB sandwich, contact Sika Industry Technical Department.
  • Thanks to special UV stabilisers, Sikaflex 296 is suitable for joints exposed to UV radiation.

Substrate preparation

Bonding surfaces must be clean, dry and free from grease, oil and dust. Depending on the substrate, the bonding faces must be treated with cleaner/activator and, where required, a suitable Sika primer in accordance with the following indications:

  • Metal with primer coat or partially new paint (< 25 %): Sika Activator
  • Metal painted with two-component lacquer: Sika Activator + Sika Primer 206 G+P
  • Old polyurethane beads (cut surface): Sika Activator
  • Laminated glass with continuous, uniformly opaque ceramic frit and light transmission factor greater than 0.1 % (visible range Getag 200D; for laminated glass limit 0.2 %): Sika Activator + Sika Primer 206 G+P
  • Laminated glass with continuous, uniformly opaque ceramic frit and light transmission factor lower than 0.1 % (visible range Getag 200D; for laminated glass limit 0.2 %): Sika Activator

Application method

  • Repair damaged glazing in accordance with the vehicle or equipment manufacturer instructions.
  • Cartridges: pierce the membrane before use.
  • Unipacs: cut the closing clip and place the unipac in the application gun.
  • Cut the nozzle to suit the joint dimensions.
  • Apply with cartridge/unipac piston gun (manual or pneumatic) or with a pump extrusion system.
  • To obtain a uniform adhesive thickness, apply Sikaflex 296 as a triangular bead.
  • Completely fill the open joint with Sikaflex 296 without voids until it slightly overfills, then remove the excess with a suitable spatula or knife.
  • If required, the exposed joint can be tooled to a smooth finish using Sika Tooling Agent N.
  • Do not apply at substrate or product temperatures below 10 °C or above 35 °C.
  • Optimum substrate and adhesive temperature range: 15 °C to 25 °C.

Storage and handling

  • Keep containers dry, tightly closed, and stored in a cool, well-ventilated place.
  • Protect from frost.
  • Protect from high temperatures and direct sunlight.
  • Protect from water and air humidity.
  • Observe the indicated shelf life at storage temperatures below 25 °C.
