description

What is Bostik SIMSON PREP CS and why choose it?

Bostik SIMSON PREP CS is a one-step surface preparation primer designed to improve the adhesion of many Bostik elastic bonding products on closed, non-porous substrates. It combines cleaning and priming in a single operation, dries quickly (around 5 minutes depending on the substrate) and can be checked under UV light, making application control easier in professional bonding and sealing projects.

Main features

  • One-step surface preparation for closed substrates.
  • Improves adhesion of Bostik elastic bonding products.
  • Fast drying time of approximately 5 minutes at 20 °C / 50% RH, depending on substrate.
  • Low-viscosity, easy-to-apply liquid.
  • UV traceable at approximately 365 nm (appears bright blue under UV light after drying).
  • Can be used as both cleaner and primer in a single product.
  • Consumption of about 20 m² per litre (indicative value).
  • Supplied in 500 ml metal cans.

Technical specifications

  • Physical form: Low-viscosity liquid.
  • Colour: Light yellow / transparent.
  • Odour: Alcohol.
  • Specific density: ca. 0.79–0.85 g/ml.
  • Solid content: < 1%.
  • VOC content: 97.4%.
  • Flash point: ca. +12 °C (closed cup).
  • Drying time: ca. 5 minutes at 20 °C / 50% RH.
  • Application temperature: +5 °C to +30 °C.
  • Serviceable temperature range (storage recommendation): keep between +5 °C and +25 / +30 °C depending on document section.
  • UV traceability: approx. 365 nm (bright blue under UV light after drying).
  • Packaging: 500 ml can.
  • Storage stability (technical datasheet): up to 9 months in unopened original packaging, dry, between +5 °C and +30 °C, protected from frost.
  • Storage stability (other document): up to 12 months in unopened original packaging, dry, between +5 °C and +30 °C; once opened, usable for a maximum of 2 weeks if well closed.

Applications and uses

Recommended substrates

  • Metals such as aluminium, steel, copper and brass.
  • Metals coated with powder coatings.
  • Lacquered substrates (adhesion and possible surface attack should be tested beforehand).
  • Polyester (GRP) substrates.
  • ABS.
  • PVC.
  • Other plastics and composites with closed surfaces.

Typical use cases

  • Pre-treatment of closed, non-porous surfaces prior to bonding with Bostik elastic adhesives.
  • Pre-treatment before sealing operations with compatible Bostik sealants.
  • Situations where rapid processing is required, thanks to the short drying time.
  • Applications where post-checking of primer coverage under UV light is desired.

Application method

  1. Substrate preparation: Surfaces must be clean, dry and free from dust and grease. For heavily contaminated substrates, they may be cleaned beforehand with Cleaner I or Cleaner 14 and left to dry for 5 minutes before applying SIMSON PREP CS.
  2. Handling the can: Keep the can closed until use. Open and pierce the lid. Do not use directly from the original container.
  3. Decanting: Pour only the amount needed for 30 minutes of work into a clean glass or metal container and close the original can immediately and hermetically. Do not return unused product to the original container.
  4. Application: Moisten a clean, lint-free, colourless cloth with SIMSON PREP CS and wipe the bonding surface thoroughly. Replace the cloth as soon as it becomes dirty.
  5. Drying: Allow to dry for at least 5 minutes to ensure solvent evaporation.
  6. Bonding or sealing: Apply the adhesive or sealant within 6 hours after primer application. Do not apply on surfaces that cannot be bonded within this time window.
  7. Avoid contamination: Prevent any contact with the cleaned and pre-treated surface to avoid loss of adhesion.
  8. Coverage control: After drying, primer coverage can be verified with UV light at around 365 nm; the treated area will light up bright blue.

FAQ

1. What type of product is Bostik SIMSON PREP CS?

It is a one-step primer and pre-treatment for closed, non-porous substrates, formulated to improve adhesion of many Bostik elastic bonding products.

2. On which materials can I use SIMSON PREP CS?

It can be used on aluminium, steel, copper, brass, coated metals, lacquered substrates (after preliminary testing), polyester (GRP), ABS, PVC and other plastics/composites with closed surfaces.

3. How long should I wait before applying the adhesive or sealant?

After wiping the substrate, allow SIMSON PREP CS to dry for at least about 5 minutes before applying adhesive or sealant.

4. How long after priming can I still bond the surface?

The best results are obtained when bonding or sealing takes place within 6 hours of applying SIMSON PREP CS. It should not be applied on surfaces that cannot be bonded within this period.

5. Can I reuse leftover product that was poured into another container?

No. Only pour the quantity needed for approximately 30 minutes of work and do not return unused material to the original container.

6. How can I check whether the primer has been applied correctly?

After drying, the presence of SIMSON PREP CS can be checked under UV light at about 365 nm, where it appears bright blue.

7. What is the approximate consumption per litre?

The indicative consumption is about 20 m² per litre.

8. How should SIMSON PREP CS be stored?

It should be stored in the unopened original packaging, in a dry place, at temperatures between +5 °C and +30 °C, protected from frost. Depending on the document section, storage stability is stated as up to 9 or up to 12 months. Once opened, it should be used within a maximum of 2 weeks if the container is kept well closed.

9. Is SIMSON PREP CS flammable?

Yes. According to classification, it is a highly flammable liquid (Flammable liquid Category 2, H225) with a flash point of approximately +12 °C.

10. What are the main components?

The mixture contains isopropyl alcohol and butyl titanate as classified components.
