description

What is Epifanes Waterline Paint and why choose it?

Epifanes Waterline Paint is a one-component, high gloss yacht coating specially developed for painting the stripe above the waterline. Based on linseed oil and modified alkyd resin, it is easy to apply in a wide temperature range, offers good gloss retention and provides strong hiding power thanks to its high pigment concentration. It is suitable for new construction and maintenance systems on wood, steel, GRP and aluminium when used with the appropriate primers and topcoats.

Supplied in handy 250 ml cans in several solid colours, this product is ideal wherever only a relatively small quantity of paint is required, such as waterlines and trim areas.

Applications and use cases

Recommended field of use

  • Painting and renewing waterline stripes above the waterline on yachts and boats.
  • Use on new systems on:
    • Wood.
    • Steel.
    • GRP.
    • Aluminium.
in combination with suitable Epifanes primers and topcoats.
  • Overcoating existing paint systems, regardless of manufacturer, after proper preparation.
  • Other small areas where only a small amount of topcoat is needed.

Application conditions

  • Substrate temperature: Minimum 8 °C, maximum 30 °C.
  • Relative humidity: Minimum 50 %, maximum 85 %.
  • Maximum allowed temperature difference between paint and substrate: 3 °C.
  • Avoid direct sunlight and strong wind to prevent rapid solvent loss and poor flow.

Application method

  • Best applied with a roller or long-haired soft brush.
  • Distribute paint evenly and do not re-tip.
  • Do not apply wet-on-wet.
  • Avoid excessively thick wet films to prevent sagging and extended drying times, especially on horizontal surfaces.
  • Between coats, allow sufficient drying, then sand lightly by hand with P400 or Scotch-Brite.

System build-up around the waterline

  1. Apply the complete primer and topcoat system to the hull and allow to cure thoroughly.
  2. Tape off the waterline once the underlying system has cured.
  3. Lightly sand the area to be coated.
  4. Apply Epifanes Waterline Paint to the prepared stripe.
  5. Remove masking tape in time to prevent adhesion of the tape to the coating.

The product can also be applied directly onto a GRP surface, provided it is well cleaned and sanded.

Compatibility with other Epifanes products

  • Epifanes Mono-urethane Yacht Paint.
  • Epifanes Nautiforte Yacht Paint.
  • Epifanes Non-skid Deck Coating.
  • Epifanes Satin Finish.

FAQ – Epifanes Waterline Paint

1. On which substrates can I use this paint?

It can be used on wood, steel, GRP and aluminium, in combination with suitable primers and paints. It is also suitable for application over existing paint systems, regardless of brand, after correct preparation.

2. Can I apply it directly on GRP without primer?

Yes, Epifanes Waterline Paint may be applied directly to GRP when the surface is thoroughly cleaned and sanded.

3. What is the theoretical coverage?

The theoretical coverage is approximately 14 m² per litre at 40 µm dry film thickness. Practical coverage depends on substrate condition, application method and environmental conditions.

4. How long should I wait between coats?

At 20 °C and 65 % RH, the paint is dust dry after about 4 hours and sandable/recoatable after approximately 24 hours. At lower temperatures drying and recoating times are longer; at higher temperatures they are shorter.

5. Which thinner should I use?

For brushing, use Epifanes Brushthinner for Paint & Varnish or a good quality white spirit. The exact thinning ratio depends on product temperature and working conditions; over-thinning should be avoided.

6. In what temperature and humidity range should I apply the paint?

Apply between 8–30 °C and 50–85 % relative humidity. Avoid direct sunlight and strong wind to maintain good flow and levelling.

7. How should I prepare the waterline area?

First complete and cure the full hull primer/topcoat system, tape off the waterline, lightly sand the stripe, then apply Epifanes Waterline Paint and remove the masking tape before it adheres strongly.

8. How should I store the product?

Store in tightly closed, unopened containers in a dry place between 5–30 °C. Under these conditions the approximate shelf life is 3 years.

9. Is the product flammable?

Yes. Epifanes Waterline Paint is classified as a flammable liquid (Flam. Liq. 3, H226: flammable liquid and vapour). Keep away from heat, sparks, open flames and hot surfaces and follow all safety recommendations on the label and safety data sheet.

10. Are there any health warnings I should know about?

The mixture may cause an allergic skin reaction (H317) and may cause drowsiness or dizziness (H336). Repeated exposure may cause skin dryness or cracking (EUH066). Contains cobalt carboxylate which can cause an allergic reaction. Always use appropriate personal protective equipment and sufficient ventilation.
