description

What is Epifanes Classic Mahogany Stain and why choose it?

Epifanes Classic Mahogany Stain is a quick-drying, impregnating, mahogany-coloured wood stain designed to provide in-depth tinting on bare wood. It is especially suitable for restoring a warm tone to faded wood and for camouflaging discoloured patches before applying Epifanes one- or two-component varnish systems. The stain can also be used as a colour enhancer in most Epifanes clear varnishes and epoxy resins, offering versatile use in both interior and exterior projects above the waterline.

Main features

  • Warm mahogany colour: Classic mahogany tone to enrich and even out the appearance of bare wood.
  • Deep impregnation: Coloured pigments in solvent provide in-depth tinting rather than forming a surface film.
  • Fast drying: Dust-dry from 20 minutes (77 °F) and recoatable from 1 hour (77 °F), depending on temperature.
  • Versatile use: For interior and exterior wood above the waterline and as a tinting additive for Epifanes clear varnishes and selected epoxy resins.
  • Ideal for repair work: Helps hide colour differences and discoloured spots in wood prior to varnishing.
  • Easy application: Applied with lint-free cloth, foam roller, foam brush or soft longhaired brush; no sanding of the stain required between coats.
  • High VOC, low solids: Very low viscosity product that penetrates well but can spill easily, so careful handling is needed.

Applications and uses

Field of use

  • Interior and exterior wood above the waterline.
  • Bare solid wood such as meranti, mahogany, Oregon pine, teak and iroko.
  • Plywood and other suitable wooden substrates.

As a stand-alone stain on bare wood

  • Restore warmth to faded or weathered mahogany and other hardwoods.
  • Even out colour differences and disguise discoloured patches before clear varnishing.
  • Apply along the wood grain in thin coats (up to 3 coats depending on desired colour depth).
  • No sanding required between stain coats.

As a tinting additive in varnishes

  • May be added up to 10% to almost all Epifanes one- and two-component clear varnishes to create a mahogany-tinted varnish.
  • Helps hide uneven colour patches in the wood and enhances its warm tone.
  • Applying more tinted coats further intensifies the final colour; once the desired tone is achieved, continue the varnish system without additional stain.
  • Also suitable for addition to West System Epoxy Resin to obtain a mahogany-coloured epoxy.
  • Do not apply Epifanes Classic Mahogany Stain on top of existing varnish layers.
  • Do not use in combination with Epifanes Rubbed Effect Low VOC (Epifanes Aqua Marine).

Compatible Epifanes varnish systems (recoatability)

After proper drying, the stain can be recoated with the following Epifanes products:

  • One-component: Epifanes Clear Varnish, Epifanes Woodfinish Gloss, Epifanes Woodfinish Matte, Epifanes Rubbed Effect Varnish, Epifanes Rubbed Effect Varnish Low VOC, Epifanes Rapidclear, Epifanes Rapidcoat.

FAQ

  1. On which surfaces can I use Epifanes Classic Mahogany Stain?

It is intended for bare, dry, degreased and sanded solid wood (meranti, mahogany, Oregon pine, teak, iroko) and plywood, for both interior and exterior applications above the waterline.

  2. How many coats can I apply?

You can apply up to 3 coats, depending on the desired colour depth. Allow each coat to dry for about 2 hours at 65 °F before recoating.

  3. Do I need to sand between stain coats?

No. Sanding of Epifanes Classic Mahogany Stain between coats is not required.

  4. Can I thin the stain for brushing or spraying?

No. The product should not be thinned for brush application and is not intended for spray application.

  5. When can I apply varnish over the stain?

You should wait at least 3 days for the stain to fully dry before applying Epifanes one- or two-component varnishes.

  6. Can I use this stain over an existing varnish?

No. Epifanes Classic Mahogany Stain must not be applied on top of varnish. It is designed for bare wood or as an additive mixed into compatible varnishes.

  7. Is it suitable as a colour additive in varnish or epoxy?

Yes. It can be added up to 10% to most Epifanes one- and two-component clear varnishes and to West System Epoxy Resin to create a mahogany-tinted coating.

  8. What should I do if I spill the product?

Due to its low viscosity, spills can occur easily. Remove spills as soon as possible with Epifanes Brushthinner for Paint & Varnish where needed, and absorb larger spills with suitable absorbent material. Prevent the product from entering drains, surface water or soil.

  9. Can I use it in direct sunlight or strong wind?

No. Avoid application in direct sunlight or strong wind, as rapid solvent loss can cause uneven pigment distribution and spot colouring.

  10. What is the approximate coverage I can expect?

The theoretical coverage is about 215 ft² per litre per coat, depending on the absorption rate of the wood and application conditions.

Section 8 – Individual protection measures

Exposure controls and personal protection

  • General hygiene measures: Keep away from food, beverages and feed. Remove soiled or contaminated clothing immediately. Wash hands before breaks and after work.
  • Respiratory protection: Use a suitable respiratory filter device in case of brief exposure or low concentrations. For intensive or prolonged exposure, use respiratory protective equipment independent of ambient air (for example, a respirator with AX-type filter as indicated).
  • Hand protection: Wear protective gloves impermeable and resistant to the product. For permanent contact, nitrile rubber gloves (recommended thickness > 0.45 mm, permeation time > 480 min according to EN 374). For splash protection, PVC or nitrile gloves with thickness > 0.45 mm and breakthrough time > 30 min (EN 374).
  • Eye and face protection: Wear tightly sealed safety goggles or appropriate face protection.
  • Skin and body protection: Wear suitable protective clothing as needed to prevent skin contact. The product has very low viscosity and can easily cause drops and spills, so protective gloves and face protection are strongly recommended.
