What is Epifanes SATIN FINISH and why choose it?

Epifanes SATIN FINISH is a one-component urethane satin yacht paint designed for interior and exterior use. It offers a satin gloss appearance, very good flow characteristics and is easy to apply across a wide range of temperatures. The high pigment concentration provides strong hiding power and good colour retention, while the cured coating offers outstanding resistance to alcohol and common household chemicals.

Used together with the appropriate Epifanes primers and, for exterior systems, a high gloss topcoat, SATIN FINISH delivers a durable, easy-to-maintain satin surface on wood, steel, GRP and aluminium.

Main features

  • One-component oxidative drying urethane finish.
  • Satin gloss appearance for a low-sheen, refined look.
  • Suitable for interior and exterior applications on wood, steel, GRP and aluminium in combination with the recommended primers.
  • High covering power due to high pigment concentration.
  • Good colour retention and easy maintenance over time.
  • Outstanding protection against alcohol and household chemicals.
  • Very easy application by brush, roller or spray, with excellent flow.
  • Re-coatable with various Epifanes topcoats such as Mono-urethane Yacht Paint, Yacht Enamel, Non-skid deck coating, Flat Black, Nautiforte Yacht Paint and Waterline Paint.

  • Spray: Use Epifanes Spraythinner for Paint & Varnish or denaturated alcohol.
  • General thinning: Thinning ratio depends on product temperature and working conditions; avoid over-thinning. For detailed ratios: Consultar ficha técnica del fabricante.

Spray guidelines

  • Thinning volume: 10 – 15%.
  • Nozzle size: 1.3 – 1.5 mm.
  • Pressure: 2 – 3 bar.
  • Viscosity (DIN 4 mm): 20 – 22 seconds.

Substrates and recommended primers

  • Bare GRP: Clean and degrease with Epifanes Fibreglass Prep Cleaner, sand P220–240 and apply 1 coat of primer.
  • Bare wood: Clean, dry, degrease with Epifanes Spraythinner for Paint & Varnish, sand P220–240 and apply 1–2 coats of primer.
  • Bare steel: Clean, dry, corrosion-free, degrease with Epifanes Cleaning Solution, sand P60 and apply 3 primer coats.
  • Existing paintwork: Well-adhering, dry and degreased with Epifanes Spraythinner for Paint & Varnish, sand P220–240.

Appropriate primers:

  • All substrates: Epifanes Multi Marine Primer or Epifanes Undercoat.
  • Wood: Epifanes Woodprimer.

After curing, sand each primer coat with P180–220 before applying finishing coats.

System build-up

  • General after priming: Finish with 3 full-bodied coats.
  • Interior systems: Apply 2–3 coats of SATIN FINISH.
  • Exterior systems: Apply 1–2 coats of Epifanes Mono-urethane followed by 1 coat of SATIN FINISH.

Applications and use cases

  • Interior woodwork on yachts and boats: Satin finishing coats over Epifanes wood or multi-purpose primers.
  • Exterior yacht topsides and superstructures: Final satin coat over a high gloss Mono-urethane system for improved long-term UV protection.
  • Steel and aluminium marine surfaces: In combination with the specified multi-coat primer systems.
  • GRP components: Primed GRP surfaces where a durable satin appearance and good chemical resistance are required.
  • Maintenance of existing paintwork: Over well-bonding, sanded and suitably primed Epifanes or compatible systems.

FAQ – Epifanes SATIN FINISH

  1. Is SATIN FINISH suitable for both interior and exterior use?

Yes. It is designed for interior and exterior systems on wood, steel, GRP and aluminium when used with the appropriate primers. For exterior use it should be applied over a high gloss topcoat such as Epifanes Mono-urethane for improved UV protection.

  2. What is the recommended system build-up for exterior applications?

Prime the substrate as specified, then apply 1–2 coats of Mono-urethane and finish with 1 coat of SATIN FINISH. Sand lightly between coats with P400 or Scotch Brite.

  3. How much area does one litre cover?

The theoretical coverage is about 15 m² per litre at 40 µm dry film thickness. Practical coverage depends on substrate condition, application technique and environmental conditions.

  4. How long should I wait before sanding or recoating?

At 20°C and 65% relative humidity, the coating is dust dry after roughly 2 hours and sandable/recoatable after about 24 hours. At lower temperatures drying and overcoating times increase.

  5. Which thinners should I use?

For brush and roller application use Epifanes Brushthinner for Paint & Varnish or good quality white spirit. For spray application use Epifanes Spraythinner for Paint & Varnish or denaturated alcohol. Thinning levels depend on temperature and conditions; avoid over-thinning.

  6. Can I apply this paint wet-on-wet?

No. Wet-on-wet application is not allowed. Each coat must be allowed to dry adequately and be sanded lightly before the next coat.

  7. What safety or hazard classifications apply to SATIN FINISH?

The product is classified as a flammable liquid (Flam. Liq. 3, H226), may cause an allergic skin reaction (Skin Sens. 1, H317) and may cause drowsiness or dizziness (STOT SE 3, H336). Repeated exposure may cause skin dryness or cracking (EUH066).

  8. How should I store the product?

Store only in the original, tightly closed container in a dry room at 5 – 30°C. Keep away from ignition sources and observe all national regulations regarding storage of flammable liquids.

  9. On which substrates can I use SATIN FINISH?

It can be used on properly prepared and primed wood, steel, GRP and aluminium, as well as on existing, well-bonding paintwork that has been cleaned, degreased and sanded.

  10. Is the product water-hazardous?

According to self-assessment it is classified as slightly hazardous for water (Water hazard class 1). Do not allow large quantities of undiluted product to reach groundwater, surface water or sewage systems.
