description

What is Epifanes Multi Marine Primer and why choose it

Epifanes Multi Marine Primer is a one-component, oxidative drying primer based on a modified epoxy resin, designed for universal use above the waterline. It dries fast, is easy to sand and provides protection and adhesion on a wide range of substrates, including steel, aluminium, GRP, zinc, wood and existing paint systems. Used as an all-in-one primer, it allows you to seal existing one-component systems and prepare surfaces for one-component or two-component (polyurethane) topcoats.

Main features

  • Universal above-waterline primer: Suitable for bare wood, steel, aluminium, GRP, zinc and other hard substrates, as well as existing paint layers.
  • One-component system: Simplifies application and maintenance without the need for complex multi-pack mixing.
  • Excellent adhesion: Very good bonding to wood, perfect adhesion to GRP and protective performance on steel and aluminium.
  • Fast drying and easy sanding: Short recoating intervals and easy sanding with P180–P220 to obtain a smooth surface for topcoats.
  • Barrier coat for polyurethane: When applied in at least two coats and properly cured, it can be used to seal an existing one-component system before switching to Epifanes Poly-urethane products.
  • Satin finish: Provides a smooth satin appearance, ideal as a uniform base for finishing coats.
  • Multiple colours: Available in white, grey, black and red-brown to match system build-up and inspection needs.
  • Professional and consumer use: Classified for use by both professionals (craftsmen, services) and private users.

Substrate preparation and application guidance

General conditions

  • Surface must always be clean, degreased and sanded.
  • Apply by roller, long-haired soft brush or spray.
  • Distribute the paint evenly and do not retip.
  • Do not apply wet-on-wet; avoid very heavy wet films to prevent runs and drying problems.
  • Avoid direct sunlight or strong wind to prevent too rapid solvent loss and poor flow.
  • Maximum temperature difference between paint and substrate: 3 °C.
  • If the product “pulls” and is difficult to apply, up to 10 % Epifanes Brushthinner may be added.
  • After drying, sand each coat thoroughly by hand with P180–P220 before recoating.

FAQ – Epifanes Multi Marine Primer

  1. On which surfaces can I use Epifanes Multi Marine Primer?

It can be applied above the waterline on bare wood, steel, aluminium, GRP, zinc and other hard materials, as well as on existing paint systems. Together with Epifanes Washprimer AQ it can also be used on glass.

  2. Can I use this primer before applying a two-component polyurethane topcoat?

Yes. Apply at least two coats of Multi Marine Primer, allow it to cure for a minimum of 72 hours at 20 °C (longer when possible), then sand thoroughly before applying Epifanes Poly-urethane products.

  3. What is the recommended drying time between coats?

At 20 °C and 65 % relative humidity, the primer is dust-dry after about 1 hour and sandable/recoatable after about 6 hours. Always allow sufficient drying, and never apply wet-on-wet.

  4. Which thinner should I use?

For brush or roller, use Epifanes Brushthinner for Paint & Varnish or a good quality white spirit. For spray application, use Epifanes Spraythinner for Paint & Varnish or denatured alcohol. Avoid over-thinning.

  5. Is Epifanes Multi Marine Primer suitable for underwater areas?

The datasheet specifies use above the waterline. For underwater areas, other dedicated systems should be used. Consultar ficha técnica del fabricante.

  6. How should I sand between coats?

Sand each primer coat by hand using dry sandpaper P180–P220. Remove dust and degrease where indicated before recoating.

  7. Can I apply the product in cold conditions?

Do not apply at temperatures below 10 °C. The recommended substrate and air temperature is between 10 °C and 30 °C with relative humidity between 50 % and 85 %.

  8. What is the theoretical coverage of this primer?

The theoretical coverage is approximately 10 m² per litre at 45 µm dry film thickness. Practical coverage depends on application method, surface profile and thinning.

  9. How long can I store the product?

In tightly closed, unopened containers stored dry between 5 °C and 30 °C, the approximate shelf life is 3 years.

  10. What are the main hazards associated with this product?

According to the safety data sheet, it is a flammable liquid and vapour (Flam. Liq. 3, H226), may cause drowsiness or dizziness (STOT SE 3, H336) and is harmful to aquatic life with long lasting effects (Aquatic Chronic 3, H412).
