What Epifanes FLAT BLACK is and why choose it

Epifanes FLAT BLACK is a one-component, urethane-based black matt finish designed for both interior and exterior use on properly primed wood, steel, aluminium and GRP (fibreglass). With a very low gloss level of approximately 5–10%, it delivers a modern, deep matt appearance combined with high resistance to alcohol, household chemicals and scratching.

Thanks to its oxidative drying urethane formula, Epifanes FLAT BLACK offers durable protection and an attractive uniform finish when applied as part of the recommended Epifanes paint system.

Main features

  • One-component urethane finish: Oxidative drying system, easy to apply by brush, roller or spray.
  • Deep matt look: Black colour with a matt gloss level of about 10%, giving surfaces a contemporary, low-reflection finish.
  • Chemical and scratch resistance: High resistance against alcohol and common household chemicals, with improved scratch resistance due to the urethane resin.
  • Versatile substrate compatibility: For new systems on wood, steel and aluminium, and on GRP in combination with the appropriate primer.
  • Interior and exterior use: Suitable as a finishing coat indoors and outdoors when used in the specified system build-up.
  • Good coverage: Theoretical coverage of 16 m² per litre at 35 µm dry film thickness.

Applications and use cases

Recommended fields of use

  • New paint systems on wood, steel and aluminium: Apply over the appropriate Epifanes primers and undercoats as a matt finishing coat.
  • GRP (fibreglass): Use in combination with a suitable primer, after proper cleaning and sanding.
  • Interior systems: Start with the appropriate primer, then apply several full-bodied coats of Epifanes FLAT BLACK.
  • Exterior systems: After primer, first apply a high gloss topcoat for improved long-term UV protection, then finish with 1–2 coats of FLAT BLACK.

Compatible primers and related Epifanes products

  • Primers (all substrates): Epifanes Multi Marine Primer, Epifanes Undercoat
  • Wood-specific primer: Epifanes Woodprimer

Substrate preparation (summary)

  • Bare GRP: Clean and degrease with Epifanes Fibreglass Prep Cleaner, sand with P220–240 and apply 1 primer coat before FLAT BLACK.
  • Bare wood: Clean, dry and degreased with Epifanes Spraythinner for Paint & Varnish, sand with P220–240 and apply 1–2 primer coats first.
  • Bare steel: Clean, dry, free of corrosion and degreased with Epifanes Cleaning Solution, sand with P60 and apply 3 primer coats first.
  • Existing paintwork: Well-bonding, dry and degreased with Epifanes Spraythinner for Paint & Varnish, sand with P220–240 before applying.

System build-up

  • Interior: After priming, finish with 3 full-bodied coats of Epifanes FLAT BLACK, sanding lightly between coats with P400 or Scotch-Brite.
  • Exterior: After primer, apply 1–2 coats of Epifanes Mono-urethane high gloss topcoat, then 1 coat of FLAT BLACK. Lightly sand between coats with P400 or Scotch-Brite.

FAQ – Epifanes FLAT BLACK
