description

What is Epifanes Classic Teak Stain and why choose it?

Epifanes Classic Teak Stain is an impregnating, quick-drying coloured woodstain designed to give bare wood a warm golden teak tone. It provides in-depth tinting on solid wood and plywood, restoring faded timber and helping to camouflage discoloured patches before finishing with Epifanes one- or two-component varnishes. Suitable for interior and exterior use above the waterline, it can also be used as a colour additive in many Epifanes clear varnishes and in epoxy resin.

Main features

  • Impregnating teak stain: Penetrates bare wood to provide deep, even colouring.
  • Golden teak colour: Creates a warm teak appearance on meranti, mahogany, oregon pine, teak, iroco and plywood.
  • Quick drying: Dust-dry in as little as 20 minutes at 77 °F, recoatable after 1–6 hours depending on temperature.
  • Pre-treatment for varnish systems: Ideal for evening out colour differences before applying Epifanes one- or two-component clear varnishes.
  • Colour enhancer for varnish and epoxy: May be added (up to 10%) to most Epifanes clear varnishes and to West System Epoxy Resin to create a teak-tinted finish.
  • Brush-ready formulation: Supplied ready to use; thinning is not recommended.
  • For interior and exterior use above the waterline: Versatile for marine and general wood applications where high-quality finishes are required.

Applications and use cases

Recommended substrates and field of use

  • Substrates: Bare solid wood (meranti, mahogany, oregon pine, teak, iroco) and plywood.
  • Location: Interior and exterior, above the waterline.
  • Function:
    • Providing a warm golden teak colour on new or faded wood.
    • Camouflaging discoloured patches before clear varnish systems.
    • Enhancing the aesthetic of visible woodwork on boats, furniture and other wood articles.

Surface preparation

  • Ensure wood is bare, dry, degreased and sanded with 180-grit abrasive.
  • Moisture content inside the wood must be below 15%.

Application recommendations

  • Shake well before use.
  • Do not thin; product is ready for use.
  • Apply in small quantities along the wood grain using a cloth, foam roller, foam brush or soft brush.
  • Do not overbrush and do not apply wet-on-wet.
  • Apply thin coats only and avoid direct sunlight or strong wind during application. Rapid solvent loss under such conditions can cause uneven pigment distribution and spot colouring.
  • Depending on the desired colour depth, apply up to 3 coats, allowing each coat approximately 2 hours to dry at 65 °F.
  • Sanding between stain coats is not required.
  • Avoid drops and spills; remove immediately with Epifanes Brushthinner for Paint & Varnish if necessary.

Use as a colour additive in varnish and epoxy

  • Epifanes Classic Teak Stain may be added up to 10% to Epifanes one- and two-component clear varnishes to obtain a teak-tinted varnish.
  • This helps hide colour patches in the wood and enhances its warm appearance.
  • By applying additional tinted varnish coats, the final colour will be intensified. Once the desired colour is reached, complete the varnish system without further addition of stain.
  • Also suitable for addition to West System Epoxy Resin to produce a teak-coloured epoxy resin.
  • Limitations:
    • Do not apply Epifanes Teak– and Mahogany Stain on top of existing varnish layers.
    • Do not use in combination with Epifanes Rubbed Effect Low VOC (Epifanes Aqua Marine).
