Epifanes Multilux is a non-yellowing, air-drying, one-component high gloss yacht paint designed for durable finishing of boats and yachts. Based on a siliconized alkyd resin, it offers outstanding weather and water resistance, long-lasting colour and gloss retention, excellent flow and minimal dirt retention. It is suitable for professional users and private boat owners who need a reliable, easy-to-apply topcoat above the waterline on wood, steel, aluminium or GRP/fibreglass.

Applications and cases of use

• New builds above the waterline: For wood, steel, aluminium and GRP/polyester hulls and superstructures, in combination with suitable Epifanes primers.
• Maintenance and repainting: For refreshing intact, well-adhering one- and two-component paint systems (any brand), after cleaning, degreasing and sanding.
• Interior and exterior: For cabins, superstructures and other areas above the waterline requiring a durable, high gloss white finish.
• Direct-to-fibreglass applications: Can be applied directly to well-degreased and sanded fibreglass/GRP without primer, where appropriate.

Substrate preparation and compatible primers

• General substrate condition: Intact, well-adhering, clean, degreased and sanded paint or primer systems, or well-degreased and sanded fibreglass.
• New work primer build (general recommendation):
  • GRP / Polyester: Epifanes Multi Marine Primer, 1–2 coats.
  • Steel: Epifanes Multi Marine Primer, 3 coats.
  • Wood: Epifanes Multi Marine Primer, 1–2 coats.
  • Aluminium: Epifanes Multi Marine Primer, 1–2 coats.
• Special instruction for new aluminium: Apply one thin coat of Epifanes Washprimer AQ before the Multi Marine Primer.
• Existing coatings: Use Epifanes Undercoat, Fibreglass Primer, Metalprimer or Woodprimer where indicated for the specific substrate. Sand each primer coat with P220 dry abrasive paper.

Application methods

• Tools: Soft, long-haired oval or round brush, mohair or suitable foam (moltopren) roller, or conventional air spray.
• General application advice:
  • Stir well before use.
  • Do not apply wet-on-wet.
  • Do not overbrush.
  • Avoid excessive wet film thickness to prevent runs and drying problems.
  • Ensure good ventilation during application and drying.
  • Avoid painting in direct sunlight or strong wind to prevent rapid solvent loss and reduced flow.
  • On wood, always apply along the grain and allow sufficient time for the coat to settle; avoid retipping.

Thinning and spray data

• Brush application: Thin if necessary with Epifanes Brushthinner for Paint & Varnish / Epifanes Verfverdunning or good quality white spirit, up to approx. 0–5%.
• Roller application: Apply by brush to build wet film thickness, then lightly roll out with suitable roller if required.
• Conventional air spray:
  • Thinning: Approx. 10% with Epifanes Spraythinner for Paint & Varnish / Epifanes 1-C Spuitverdunning or washing benzine.
  • Nozzle: 1.3–1.8 mm.
  • Pressure: Approx. 3 bar.
  • Viscosity: 20–22 seconds DIN 4 mm.
• Airless spray:
  • Thinning: 0–8%.
  • Nozzle: 0.013–0.015 inch.
  • Pressure: 140–160 bar.
  • Viscosity: 60–80 seconds DIN 4 mm.
• Flow optimization: If needed, thin up to 10% to enhance flow. Additional coats increase depth of gloss and UV protection.

Intercoat sanding and overcoating

• For good adhesion and a smooth final finish, sand each Multilux coat by hand with P400 wet abrasive paper.
• Each primer coat should be sanded with P220 dry abrasive paper.
• Recoating interval at 20 °C / 65% RH: after approximately 18 hours.
• Compatible overcoats: Epifanes Yacht Enamel, Epifanes Mono-urethane Yacht Paint, Epifanes Nonskid Deckcoating, Epifanes Waterline Paint, Epifanes Multiforte.

• What type of paint is Epifanes Multilux?

  Epifanes Multilux is a non-yellowing, air-drying, one-component high gloss yacht paint based on a siliconized alkyd resin.

• On which substrates can Multilux be used?

  It can be used above the waterline on GRP/fibreglass, steel, wood and aluminium, both indoors and outdoors, in combination with suitable primers. It is also suitable for maintenance of existing one- and two-component systems and can be applied directly to well-prepared fibreglass.

• Can Epifanes Multilux be used over existing paint?

  Yes, it can be applied over intact, well-adhering, cleaned, degreased and sanded one- and two-component coatings from any brand. Existing surfaces must be clean, dry, salt-free and sanded.

• What is the recommended number of coats?

  For long-term outdoor durability and gloss retention, a total of 100–120 µm dry film thickness is recommended, which corresponds to approximately 3 coats by brush or 4 coats when applied by roller.

• How should I sand between coats?

  Each coat of Multilux should be sanded by hand with P400 wet abrasive paper. Each primer coat should be sanded with P220 dry abrasive paper.

• How long should I wait before recoating?

  At 20 °C and 65% relative humidity, Multilux is typically dust dry after 1 hour and can be sanded and recoated after about 18 hours, at a dry film thickness of 30–40 µm.

• Which thinners are recommended?

  For brush applications, use Epifanes Brushthinner for Paint & Varnish or Epifanes Verfverdunning / good quality white spirit. For spray applications, use Epifanes Spraythinner for Paint & Varnish or Epifanes 1-C Spuitverdunning / washing benzine.

• Is Epifanes Multilux suitable for aluminium?

  Yes. On new aluminium, first apply one thin coat of Epifanes Washprimer AQ, followed by Epifanes Multi Marine Primer (1–2 coats), then Epifanes Multilux.

• What is the theoretical coverage?

  The theoretical coverage is approximately 13 m² per litre at a dry film thickness of 40 µm. Practical coverage depends on the substrate, application method and shape of the object.

• How long can I store Epifanes Multilux?

  When stored in unopened original containers in the dark at 5–25 °C, the shelf life is approximately 3 years from production.

Hazards

Personal protective equipment (PPE)

• Respiratory protection:
  • Respiratory protection is recommended.
  • If ventilation is insufficient, use a suitable respirator with AX filter.
• Hand protection:
  • Wear protective gloves resistant to solvents.
  • For prolonged contact: nitrile rubber gloves, recommended thickness > 0.45 mm, permeation time > 480 min (EN 374).
  • For splash protection: chloroprene gloves (> 0.7 mm, > 60 min, EN 374) or nitrile rubber gloves (> 0.3 mm, > 60 min, EN 374).
  • Glove selection must also consider manufacturer-specific data; durability must be checked before use.
• Eye and face protection: Wear tightly fitting safety goggles.
• Skin and body protection: Wear suitable protective clothing. Remove contaminated clothing immediately.

First aid measures

• Inhalation: Move to fresh air and consult a physician as a precaution. In case of unconsciousness, place and transport in stable side position.
• Skin contact: Remove contaminated clothing immediately. Wash skin with water and soap and rinse well.
• Eye contact: Rinse cautiously with running water for several minutes with eyelids open.
• Ingestion: Seek expert medical treatment immediately. If swallowed, contact a poison centre or doctor.

Handling and storage

• Protect from heat and direct sunlight.
• Ensure good ventilation and/or extraction at the workplace.
