description

What is Interfine 691 Part A Indivisible Kit and why choose it?

Interfine 691 Part A is the base component of a two-pack, epoxy acrylic, isocyanate-free cosmetic finish from International Marine. When mixed with its dedicated curing agent (Part B – GFA691), it provides a high-gloss, durable topcoat designed for above-water areas. It offers performance equivalent to typical recoatable polyurethane cosmetic finishes, with the advantage of being isocyanate-free, making it suitable where isocyanate-containing products are restricted.

This coating is formulated for professional use in marine environments, both at newbuilding and during maintenance and repair, delivering long-term aesthetic and protective performance on correctly primed substrates.

Main features

  • Two-pack epoxy acrylic system: Part A base to be mixed with Part B (curing agent GFA691) before application.
  • Isocyanate-free finish: Designed as an alternative to conventional polyurethane cosmetic finishes.
  • High gloss appearance: Gloss finish for an attractive, uniform cosmetic topcoat.
  • Good long-term durability: Intended to provide a long-lasting cosmetic finish in demanding marine conditions.
  • Above-water use: For areas above the waterline; not recommended for immersed service.
  • Versatile application methods: Suitable for airless spray, conventional spray, brush or roller.
  • Compatible colour range: Available in white (code GFB000), black (code GFY999) and a range of colours.
  • Recoatable: Can be overcoated with Interfine 691 within extended overcoating intervals, depending on temperature.
  • Designed for professional use: To be applied by trained operators following appropriate safety and application procedures.

Systems and substrate compatibility

Interfine 691 (Part A mixed with Part B) must be applied over suitable epoxy anticorrosive primers or tie coats. Selection of the primer system will depend on the vessel area and application location.

Recommended primers/tie coats

  • Intergard 263
  • Intergard 269
  • Intergard 400
  • Intershield 300
  • Intershield 803

Primers requiring a tie coat before Interfine 691

  • Interbond 201
  • Interbond 501
  • Intertuf 262

Interfine 691 may be applied directly over intact, tightly adherent aged Interfine 691 after thorough fresh water washing and degreasing. Loose or flaking coatings must be removed and repairs carried out with Interfine 691 or an appropriate primer before applying a full coat.

Surface preparation

  • Use in accordance with standard Worldwide Marine Specifications.
  • All surfaces must be clean, dry and free from oil, grease, soluble salts and other contaminants.
  • Carry out high-pressure fresh water washing or fresh water washing as appropriate.
  • Remove oil and grease and other soluble contamination in accordance with SSPC-SP1 solvent cleaning.
  • For newbuilding or major refurbishment, apply Interfine 691 over a recommended primer scheme. The primer must be within its specified overcoating interval and free from contamination.
  • Areas of breakdown or damage should be prepared to the specified standard (e.g. Sa2½, ISO 8501-1:2007) and re-primed before application.

Applications and use cases

When combined with Part B, Interfine 691 Part A Indivisible Kit is suitable for:

  • Marine topsides and superstructures: Cosmetic finishing of above-water hull areas and superstructure surfaces.
  • Newbuild projects: Final cosmetic finish over approved epoxy anticorrosive systems.
  • Maintenance and repair: Refurbishment of existing Interfine 691 systems or compatible primed surfaces during docking or on-board maintenance.
  • On-board touch-up: Local repairs where a durable, high-gloss, isocyanate-free topcoat is required above the waterline.

This product is not recommended for immersed service conditions.

Limitations and application considerations

  • Not recommended for use in immersed conditions.
  • For brush and roller application, and in some colours, two coats may be necessary to achieve uniform coverage, especially over dark undercoats and with certain bright, lead-free colours (e.g. yellows and oranges).
  • High relative humidity, fog or condensation during or just after application may lead to a matt finish and inferior film properties.
  • Premature exposure to ponding water (e.g. on external decks) can cause colour change, particularly in dark shades and at low temperatures.
  • Apply only in good weather conditions. Substrate temperature must be at least 3°C above dew point.
  • For optimum application properties, bring the material to approximately 21–27°C before mixing and application, unless otherwise specified.
  • Unmixed material (closed containers) should be stored as specified in the storage section.
