What it is and why choose it

Epifanes Nonskid Deckcoating is a one-component, semi-gloss yacht deck paint with integrated non-slip additives. Designed specifically for decks and gangways, it uses lightweight polypropylene beads to create an effective non-skid surface that is not sharp to bare feet. Applied as the final finish over an appropriate primer and a high gloss topcoat, it offers durable protection for wood, steel, aluminium and GRP substrates that remain permanently above the waterline.

This coating combines a slip-resistant texture, good coverage and controlled gloss, making it suitable for walkable areas where traction and appearance are both important.

Main features

  • Non-slip finish: Contains lightweight non-skid beads that provide optimal grip on decks and gangways.
  • Comfortable underfoot: The non-skid particle is not sharp, making it suitable for bare feet.
  • One-component system: Oxidative drying coating based on urethane resin with polypropylene beads.
  • Semi-gloss appearance: Provides a low-sheen, functional finish that reduces glare on deck.
  • Multi-surface use: For new systems on wood, steel, aluminium and GRP (in combination with the specified primers and high gloss undercoat).
  • Above-waterline application: For surfaces that are constantly above the waterline.
  • Colour range: Available in white, creme (1), light grey (212) and mid grey (213).
  • Good coverage: Theoretical coverage of 8 m² per litre at 65 μm dry film thickness.
  • Deck application by roller: Optimised for application with a soft, short-haired roller; spray application is not advised.

  • Roller thinner: Epifanes Brushthinner for Paint & Varnish or a good quality white spirit
  • Spray application: Not advised

Drying and overcoating times (approximate, at 65% RH and 50 μm dry film)

  • 10 °C: Dust dry 5 h; sandable/recoatable 48 h
  • 15 °C: Dust dry 3 h; sandable/recoatable 36 h
  • 20 °C: Dust dry 1 h; sandable/recoatable 24 h
  • 25 °C: Dust dry 45 min; sandable/recoatable 20 h

Drying times depend on ventilation and applied wet film thickness. Higher film thicknesses and poor ventilation will significantly extend drying, especially on horizontal areas.

Applications and recommended systems

Epifanes Nonskid Deckcoating is intended for use as the non-slip topcoat on walkable areas such as yacht decks and gangways. It must be used in combination with suitable primers and, in most systems, a high gloss undercoat to form a water-locking layer.

Field of use

  • New systems on wood, steel and aluminium above the waterline
  • GRP (fibreglass) in combination with an appropriate primer and one coat of regular Epifanes high gloss paint
  • Well-adhering existing paint systems that are dry, clean and properly sanded

It may only be applied on surfaces that are continuously above the waterline.

Surface preparation and primers

Bare GRP

  • Clean and degrease with Epifanes Fibreglass Prep Cleaner
  • Sand with P220–240
  • Apply 1–2 coats of Epifanes Multi Marine Primer
  • Apply Epifanes Undercoat where specified

Bare wood

  • Clean, dry and degrease with Epifanes Spraythinner for Paint & Varnish
  • Sand with P220–240
  • Apply 1–2 primer coats (Epifanes Multi Marine Primer and/or Woodprimer as indicated)

Bare steel

  • Clean, dry, free of corrosion and degrease with Epifanes Cleaning Solution
  • Sand with P60
  • Apply 3 primer coats of an appropriate Epifanes primer system (e.g. Epifanes Multi Marine Primer and Undercoat)

New aluminium

  • Apply Epifanes Washprimer AQ
  • Follow with 1–2 coats of Epifanes Multi Marine Primer

Existing paintwork

  • Ensure coating is well-bonding, dry and degreased with Epifanes Spraythinner for Paint & Varnish
  • Sand with P220–240

High gloss undercoat before non-skid finish

  • After curing, sand each primer coat with P180–220
  • Apply one coat of Epifanes Yacht Enamel or Epifanes Mono-urethane Yacht Paint to create a high gloss water-lock layer
  • After drying, lightly sand this high gloss coat with P280
  • Then apply the first coat of Epifanes Nonskid Deckcoating

Allow the nonskid deck coating 72 hours to cure at approximately 18 °C.

Application conditions

  • Substrate / ambient temperature: minimum 8 °C, maximum 30 °C
  • Relative humidity: minimum 50%, maximum 85%
  • Maximum temperature difference between paint and surface: 3 °C

Avoid painting in direct sunlight or strong wind to prevent rapid solvent loss and poor flow. Do not apply wet-on-wet and avoid excessive wet film thickness to prevent curtains and drying problems.

Application method

  • Use a soft, short-haired roller for best results.
  • Distribute the paint evenly over the surface and do not re-tip.
  • Apply two coats of Nonskid Deckcoating.
  • Sanding between coats is not necessary.
  • If the product “pulls” or is difficult to apply, up to 10% Epifanes Brushthinner for Paint & Varnish may be added.
  • Avoid repetitive roller movements to maintain an even, uniform texture.

Compatibility with other Epifanes products

  • Can be recoated or combined in systems with: Epifanes Mono-urethane Yacht Paint, Epifanes Yacht Enamel, Epifanes Flat Black, Epifanes Satin Finish, Epifanes Nautiforte Yacht Paint and Epifanes Waterline Paint (as indicated in Epifanes systems).

FAQ

  1. On which substrates can Epifanes Nonskid Deckcoating be used?

It can be used on wood, steel, aluminium and GRP (fibreglass), provided the correct Epifanes primers and undercoats are applied and the surface is above the waterline.

  2. Do I need a primer before applying this non-skid deck paint?

Yes. Bare substrates must be primed with suitable Epifanes primers (such as Epifanes Multi Marine Primer, Woodprimer or Washprimer AQ for aluminium) and, in most systems, followed by Epifanes Undercoat and a high gloss topcoat before applying the nonskid finish.

  3. Why is a high gloss coat recommended before the nonskid coats?

The high gloss coat (Epifanes Yacht Enamel or Mono-urethane Yacht Paint) forms a water-locking layer and provides an optimal base for adhesion and durability of the Nonskid Deckcoating.

  4. How many coats of Nonskid Deckcoating should I apply?

Two coats applied by short-haired roller are recommended for optimal non-skid effect and protection.

  5. Can I spray-apply this product?

No. Spray application is not advised. The product is formulated for application by roller (and brush where necessary).

  6. What coverage can I expect?

The theoretical coverage is about 8 m² per litre at a dry film thickness of 65 μm. Practical coverage depends on surface condition, shape and application method.

  7. How long should I wait between coats?

At 20 °C and 65% relative humidity, the coating is typically dust-dry after about 1 hour and recoatable after approximately 24 hours. Lower temperatures or thicker films require longer drying times.

  8. Can this paint be used below the waterline?

No. It may only be applied on surfaces that are constantly above the waterline.

  9. Is sanding between nonskid coats necessary?

No. Sanding between coats of Nonskid Deckcoating is not required under normal conditions.

  10. What colours are available?

The product is available in white, creme (1), light grey (212) and mid grey (213).
