What is SEAJET CLEAR COAT and why choose it

SEAJET CLEAR COAT is a transparent foul-release coating specifically developed for underwater lights, transducers and bow thrusters. It forms a special film that limits the adhesion of marine fouling in both fresh and salt water. Fouling may attach loosely but is easily removed by water movement or by simple washing with a hose and sponge, helping to keep underwater equipment clean and efficient for longer.

This 0.25 L presentation is ideal for targeted applications on glass and similar substrates or suitably primed bow thruster surfaces, using only brushes or rollers.

Applications and use cases

Underwater lights

  • Apply on glass or similar substrates of underwater light lenses to reduce fouling build-up.
  • Helps maintain light output by making marine growth easier to remove with water movement or simple washing.

Transducers

  • Suitable for use on transducer faces where fouling can interfere with signal quality.
  • Foul-release film assists in keeping the surface smooth and easier to clean.

Bow thrusters

  • For bow thrusters, first prime with SEAJET 114 PROPELLER PRIMER on suitable substrates, then apply SEAJET CLEAR COAT.
  • Recommended procedure for repairs: abrade damaged areas with P-180 abrasive paper, wipe with thinner, touch up with SEAJET 114 PROPELLER PRIMER and reapply two fresh coats of SEAJET CLEAR COAT.

Application guidance

  • Mix thoroughly before use until the product is of a uniform consistency.
  • First-time application: apply two coats of SEAJET CLEAR COAT.
  • Recoating old SEAJET CLEAR COAT: remove any fouling and clean with a sponge; for bow thrusters follow the repair procedure described above and then apply two new coats.
  • For fouling removal during service, use a light-pressure wash or hose and sponge to avoid damaging the coating.
  • SEAJET CLEAR COAT should only be repainted by itself.

FAQ

  1. Is SEAJET CLEAR COAT an antifouling paint?

No. SEAJET CLEAR COAT is a foul-release coating. It does not work like traditional antifouling; instead, its special film properties limit the adhesion of fouling so that it can be removed more easily.

  2. On which substrates can I apply this product?

It is designed for glass or similar substrates and suitably primed surfaces in the case of bow thrusters. For bow thrusters, SEAJET 114 PROPELLER PRIMER is specified as the preceding coating.

  3. How many coats are recommended?

For first-time use, two coats of SEAJET CLEAR COAT are recommended. When recoating existing SEAJET CLEAR COAT, clean the surface and apply two fresh coats after any necessary repairs.

  4. Can I thin the product?

Thinning with SEAJET THINNER A is indicated at 0–1 % by volume. Only SEAJET THINNER A should be used.

  5. How do I clean fouling from a coated surface?

Fouling that has loosely attached to the coating should be removed with a light-pressure wash or by cleaning with a hose and sponge. This avoids damage to the coating and leaves it looking like new.

  6. What drying time is needed before launching?

At 20 °C and 45 µm dry film thickness, the product is typically dry to launch after about 8 hours. At lower temperatures, longer times are required (for example, about 12 hours at 5 °C).

  7. Can I overcoat SEAJET CLEAR COAT with other paints?

No. The product should only be repainted by itself.

  8. How should I store unused product?

Store the container firmly closed in a dry, cool and well-ventilated space, away from direct sunlight, heat, sparks and open flames.

  9. Is the product flammable?

Yes. It is classified as a flammable liquid and vapour. Keep away from heat, hot surfaces, sparks, open flames and other ignition sources, and do not smoke nearby.

  10. Is it hazardous to the environment?

The mixture is classified as harmful to aquatic organisms with long-lasting effects. Avoid release to the environment and prevent product and waste from entering drains or watercourses.

Section 8 – Personal protective measures

Exposure controls

  • Use only in well-ventilated areas. Provide adequate local exhaust and general ventilation to keep solvent vapour and spray mist below occupational exposure limits.
  • Avoid creation of flammable or explosive vapour concentrations.
  • Keep away from sources of ignition. Use only non-sparking tools and properly grounded equipment.

Personal protective equipment (PPE)

Respiratory protection

  • When ventilation is insufficient or workers may be exposed above limits, use a half mask conforming to EN 140 fitted with a combined particulate and vapour filter according to EN 14387, with a protection factor of at least 10 (for example, type A2P3).
  • During spraying in enclosed spaces such as spray booths where vapour and particulate concentrations cannot be controlled, use an air-supplied respirator until solvent vapour and particulate levels are below exposure limits.

Hand protection

  • Use chemical-resistant gloves tested according to EN 374.
  • For repeated or prolonged contact, gloves with high resistance are recommended, such as:
    • Polyethylene (PE) gloves, minimum thickness 0.062 mm.
    • Polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) gloves, thickness 0.2–0.3 mm.
    • Viton/butyl gloves, minimum thickness 0.70 mm.
    • Butyl rubber gloves, minimum thickness 0.3 mm.
  • For short-term exposure or splash protection, suitable materials include PE, PVA, Viton/butyl, butyl and nitrile gloves (for example, nitrile 0.175–0.31 mm).
  • Gloves considered not adequate for longer protection include natural rubber and neoprene gloves with 0.75 mm thickness.
  • Always follow glove manufacturer instructions on use, storage, maintenance and replacement. Replace gloves at the first sign of damage.
  • PE under-gloves may be used beneath other gloves in demanding situations such as high exposure or unknown composition.

Eye and face protection

  • Wear safety goggles or face protection designed to protect against liquid splashes, conforming to EN 166.

Skin and body protection

  • Wear protective clothing that is antistatic and made from natural fibres or heat-resistant synthetic fibres.
  • Avoid skin contact. Do not use solvents or thinners to clean the skin; wash contaminated skin thoroughly with water and soap or suitable skin cleaner.

General safety and hygiene measures

  • Observe all precautionary statements on the container.
  • Keep away from heat, hot surfaces, sparks, open flames and other ignition sources. No smoking.
  • Avoid inhalation of vapours, spray mist and sanding dust. Wet sanding is preferred where possible.
  • Do not eat, drink or smoke in the application area. Wash hands and face after use and before breaks.
  • Prevent product and waste from entering drains, waterways or soil.
