Application conditions and methods

  • Application methods: Airless spray, brush, roller.
  • Airless spray parameters: 176–210 bar / 2500–3050 psi; tip size 517–521.
  • Mixing: Stir thoroughly before use until a uniform consistency is obtained.
  • Thinning: Only if necessary in case of premature surface drying. Up to 10% Thinner No. 3 may be added to improve application and drying at high temperatures or in windy conditions.
  • Cleaner: GTA007.
  • Ventilation and humidity control: Ensure adequate ventilation during application and drying.
  • Temperature limits:
    • Product temperature: between 5°C and 35°C.
    • Ambient temperature: between 5°C and 35°C.
    • Substrate temperature: at least 3°C above dew point and below 35°C.

Substrate compatibility and surface preparation

  • Suitable substrates: GRP, wood, steel/iron, lead.
  • Not suitable for: Aluminium and aluminium alloys, zinc-coated surfaces.
  • Existing antifoulings: Can be applied directly over most antifoulings in good condition, except VC17m and PTFE-based antifoulings.

Typical preparation by substrate

  • Good condition existing antifouling: Remove all fouling and contamination, including leached layer, using high-pressure fresh water (3000 psi / 207 bar) close to the surface and/or wet sand with P80–P120. If the previous antifouling is incompatible or unknown, seal with a suitable International barrier/sealer coat.
  • Poor condition existing antifouling: Remove all loose or flaking material, feather edges and sand all areas. Treat exposed substrate as new construction. If the previous antifouling is incompatible or unknown, apply a suitable International barrier/sealer coat.
  • Uncoated GRP: Degrease with appropriate solvent or detergent. Sand with 180–220 grit, clean thoroughly and allow to dry. Pre-prime with an appropriate International primer according to the specified paint system.
  • Steel: Degrease with suitable solvent or detergent. Abrasive blast to Sa 2½, near-white metal. If blasting is not possible, prepare with 24/36 grit disc or needle gun to achieve a uniform profile of 50–75 μm; use an angle grinder in difficult areas. Clean thoroughly, allow to dry and prime with an International primer as soon as possible (within 8 hours).
  • Lead: Degrease with suitable solvent or detergent, then abrade with 120P grit paper or sander. Clean thoroughly, allow to dry and pre-prime with an appropriate International primer.
  • Uncoated wood/plywood: Sand smooth with 80–180 grit, then 280 grit. Remove sanding dust by brushing, cloth or other suitable method. Clean thoroughly, ensure the surface is dry and prime with an International primer as specified.
  • Refit situations: The first coat of MICRON 99 must always be applied over a recommended anticorrosive primer system. The primed surface must be dry and free from contaminants (oil, grease, salt, etc.) and overcoated within the specified primer overcoating interval.
  • Repair/upgrade: Degrease and high-pressure wash at 3000 psi / 207 bar. Repair corroded areas with the recommended primer system.

Antifoulings should only be sanded wet. Do not dry sand or burn off old antifouling layers. The true colour will appear after immersion.

Applications and use cases

  • Professional antifouling protection for GRP, wooden, steel/iron and lead hulls.
  • Multi-season protection schemes for boats that remain afloat for up to 12 or 24 months (depending on film build and specified system).
  • Refit and maintenance work where MICRON 99 is applied over suitable International primers and, where compatible, over existing antifoulings in good condition.
  • High-wear areas such as leading edges, keel, rudder and stern gear, with additional reinforcement coats as recommended.
